New College Worcester Overview

New College Worcester is a co-educational residential school and college for blind and vision-impaired young people aged 11 to 19, based on a single campus on Whittington Road in Worcester, Worcestershire. Founded in 1866, it merged with Chorleywood College in 1987 and became an independent non-maintained special school under its present name in 2007. The school is part of Aequalis Education Trust, a Worcestershire multi-academy trust that also includes Chadsgrove College.

Each student follows a personalised programme: Key Stage 3 leads to GCSE courses, followed by A Levels and some vocational routes in the Sixth Form, while a specialist curriculum of braille, mobility, assistive technology and independent living skills runs through every year.

Boarding at New College Worcester

Students come from across the UK and overseas, and most board either weekly or for the full term. Pupils in Years 7 to 11 can be full boarders, weekly boarders or day students, and learning continues into evenings and weekends through a waking day curriculum. International students live alongside British students, and six-month placements are available. New College Worcester offers full boarding for international students; current boarder numbers are available on request.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Younger students live in two mixed-age junior houses, Bradnack House and Dorothy McHugh House, each with a study room, a sitting room and a shared kitchen under a dedicated residential leader. Sixth Formers move to Vinchel Lodge, run much like university accommodation, where they cook, budget and do their own laundry with support from a key worker. Shared bedrooms are the norm, and single rooms are available.

Boarding Life

Students help prepare breakfast in the houses on weekdays, with other meals served in the dining hall. The evening and weekend programme covers sport, art, music, drama, social events, house competitions and day and residential trips around the UK, and each half term includes an extended home weekend.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Qualified teachers of the vision impaired teach small classes, and an in-house transcription service prepares learning materials in braille, large print or other formats. Staff also support needs such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, hearing impairment and mental health needs, and a resident nurse, a counsellor and a wellbeing hub look after students' health.

International boarders at New College Worcester are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at New College Worcester

New College Worcester accepts blind and vision-impaired international students from the age of 11, from Year 7 through to the Sixth Form. Vision impairment must be the primary need. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

The school does not publish a minimum English level, and international students build their English by sharing boarding houses with British students as well as in lessons. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. New College Worcester is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and helps families complete the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

International students are expected to return home for the Christmas, Easter and summer holidays, and need a guardian and host family for exeat weekends and half terms when they cannot travel home. UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for New College Worcester boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents one reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

Six-month placements give blind and vision-impaired students from overseas full participation in lessons, boarding house life and the evening and weekend activity programme while they develop their English. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.
