New Hall School Overview

New Hall School is a Catholic, independent day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 1 to 19 in 180 acres at Boreham, on the outskirts of Chelmsford, Essex. Founded in Liège in 1642 by the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre, the school has occupied the Tudor Palace of Beaulieu since 1799.

New Hall follows a diamond model: pupils learn together in the co-educational Nursery and Preparatory divisions, in separate Boys' and Girls' Divisions from 11 to 16, and together again in the co-educational Sixth Form. Senior pupils work towards GCSEs, and the Sixth Form offers around 20 A Level subjects alongside BTEC Sport and the Extended Project Qualification.

Boarding at New Hall School

Boarding is available from Year 3 to Year 13, as full boarding seven nights a week or flexible boarding of one to six nights. Around a third of boarders come from overseas, most of them in the Sixth Form houses, and boarders represent around 30 countries. Full boarders stay at school at weekends during term, usually going home only at half term and in the holidays, and may remain in their house on optional exeat weekends.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

There are four boarding houses: Hawley for girls and Petre for boys up to Year 11, Dennett for Sixth Form girls, with around 65 beds, and Campion for around 50 Sixth Form boys within the Grade I listed main building. Each house has its own boarding team, which in the younger houses includes a matron, a boarding tutor and housekeepers, and room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.

Boarding Life

Evenings combine supervised study, with extra help from specialist staff, and social time for cooking, table tennis and board games. Full boarders use the library, swimming pool and fitness suite out of hours. Weekend trips range from London museums, theatre and Cambridge to theme parks and go-karting, and boarders attend Sunday evening Mass in the chapel.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Development department has specialist teachers for dyslexia and dyscalculia and offers small-group literacy and numeracy lessons and study skills mentoring. The Health and Wellbeing Centre has two registered nurses, a healthcare assistant and a counsellor, with on-site GP clinics twice a week.

Every international boarder at New Hall School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at New Hall School

Information for International Students and Parents

New Hall School accepts boarders from Year 3, and overseas students most often join either at 13+ or in the Sixth Form at 16+, when a larger group arrives from the UK and abroad. The main entry points are Years 7, 9 and 12, places in other year groups depend on availability, and students start in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

New Hall does not publish fixed English levels by year of entry. Its English Language Academy teaches EAL in small classes, with at least two hours a week in Years 7 to 11 and three hours a week in the Sixth Form. Students prepare for Cambridge English examinations, from the Key and Preliminary tests to the First and Advanced certificates, and IGCSE English as a Second Language is offered in place of GCSE English. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. New Hall School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and sponsors visas only for students attending as full boarders, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

New Hall School requires every student whose family lives overseas to have an educational guardian. For Child Student visa holders, the guardian must be appointed through an agency accredited by AEGIS or the Boarding Schools' Association, while other international boarders may nominate a close relative instead. The school arranges transfers to and from London Stansted Airport, around 30 minutes away.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for New Hall School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents one reliable educational guardian in the UK.

We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at New Hall School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with New Hall School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. New Hall School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
