Northbourne Park School Overview

Northbourne Park School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding prep school at Betteshanger, near Deal in Kent, set in around 100 acres of parkland and woodland. It educates children from age 2 through its Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep School, with the Prep School extending into Year 9. The school opened in 1934 as Betteshanger School in Betteshanger House and took its present name after merging with Tormore School in 1980.

Pupils in the English system prepare for the Kent Test at 11 or Common Entrance at 13 before moving on to grammar or senior independent schools. Since 1991 the school has also run the Section Française Bilingue, in which French-speaking pupils follow the official CNED French curriculum alongside lessons taught in English.

Boarding at Northbourne Park School

Around 50 children board at any one time, many of them from overseas, and the school mixes nationalities within each house. Families can choose full boarding for the whole term, weekly boarding from Monday to Friday, or flexi boarding on weeknights from Year 3. There are no compulsory exeats, so full boarders remain at school throughout the term, and international pupils can stay from one month to a year or longer.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Girls live in a purpose-built house for around 30 boarders, with five en-suite dormitories, junior and senior common rooms and on-site staff accommodation, with two staff usually sleeping over each night. Boys board in the historic main building, which holds around 35 pupils in dormitories of about five. Two house parents lead a team that includes multilingual staff and prefects.

Boarding Life

Boarders rise at 7am, and after lessons, prep and clubs they have supper at 6pm followed by an activity or free time, with lights out timed by age. On Saturdays without Saturday School there are outings to Canterbury, Deal and Betteshanger Country Park, as well as bowling and cinema trips, while Sundays bring outdoor activities and homework support.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Specialist teachers give one-to-one and small-group support for needs such as dyslexia, teaching assistants help in class, and a termly provision plan is reviewed with parents. The Good Schools Guide reports that the school also supports dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD and autism spectrum conditions.

International boarders at Northbourne Park School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed on arrival for placement rather than selection, and the school indicates these starting points:

  • English system, Years 3 to 6: little or no English
  • English system, Years 7 and 8: basic to intermediate English
  • Section Française Bilingue: no English required
  • Advanced Programme (5e, French speakers): strong English, working towards Cambridge B2 First

Younger pupils receive in-class support, Years 7 and 8 have three EAL lessons a week with a specialist teacher, and pupils can sit Cambridge English examinations from A2 Key to B2 First.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK for longer stays will usually need a Child Student visa. Northbourne Park School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

With no compulsory exeats, pupils boarding for a full term avoid mid-term travel, and supervised transport runs to London St Pancras and Gatwick. UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Northbourne Park School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers contact with the school, travel coordination and vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

International pupils can board from one month upwards. A half-term stay of four to six weeks, usually in June, follows the full curriculum and boarding routine, while a one-term stay concentrates on English progress and friendships. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.
