Learn More →Oundle School is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 11 to 18 in the market town of Oundle, Northamptonshire, about 15 miles west of Peterborough. Its buildings are spread through the town. The school traces its foundation to 1556, when Sir William Laxton, a Master of the Grocers' Company, endowed a grammar school.
Pupils join at 11, 13 or 16, and take ten GCSE or IGCSE qualifications in Years 10 and 11. In the Sixth Form, students choose from around 29 A Level subjects, with the Extended Project Qualification, a Music Diploma and an extra language among the options.
More than 800 of the school's roughly 1,100 pupils board, and around a fifth come from overseas, representing more than 30 countries. Oundle follows a full boarding model across a seven-day week: senior houses are all in or all out at weekends, and international pupils are full boarders. Weekly and three-day boarding are offered only in the junior house.
Pupils in Years 7 and 8 board in The Berrystead, a co-educational junior house. From 13 they move to one of eight boys' or five girls' senior houses, each with about 60 pupils. Younger senior pupils share small dormitories with separate studies or have bedsits, and all Sixth Form pupils have their own bedsits. A resident Housemaster or Housemistress and a live-in Matron run each house, and pupils eat their meals together in house dining rooms.
From Year 9, Saturday mornings bring lessons followed by sports fixtures in the afternoon, while younger pupils follow an activity programme that includes robotics and climbing. Saturday evenings are social, with events and exchanges between houses, and Sundays are quieter, with house trips and activities. Regular exeats give pupils time with family or guardians.
New pupils are screened on arrival, and a Learning Support department of six specialists provides one-to-one or small-group help with study skills. The Good Schools Guide notes CReSTeD registration for dyslexia. A Health Centre staffed by registered nurses is open daily with overnight cover, GPs hold surgeries on site and an Emotional Wellbeing team offers confidential one-to-one sessions.
Every international boarder at Oundle School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Oundle School website.
Oundle School admits international boarders at 11 into Year 7, at 13 into Year 9 and at 16 into the Sixth Form, with limited places at 12 and 14 when space allows. All entry points are for September, and international pupils join as full boarders, receiving an orientation programme on arrival. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Oundle School does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS levels. Applicants whose first language is not English provide an independent assessment report at an early stage, which the school uses to judge academic and pastoral fit before formal assessment. The Good Schools Guide reports English as an Additional Language support for pupils who need it. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Students from overseas without British or Irish nationality or UK settled status will usually need a Child Student visa. Oundle School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and works with a regulated immigration firm that helps families prepare the application and supporting documents, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Oundle School requires all parents living overseas to nominate an educational guardian. The guardian should be at least 25, live within a reasonable distance of the school, not be in full-time education and hold British nationality or settled status, and the school strongly advises choosing a guardian accredited by AEGIS or the BSA. The guardian is responsible for the pupil on travel days at the start and end of term, at exeats and in the holidays.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Oundle School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Oundle School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
