Pocklington School Overview

Pocklington School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in the market town of Pocklington, East Riding of Yorkshire, around 12 miles east of York. Founded in 1514 and set on a 50-acre site at the edge of the town, it educates children aged 2 to 18, from the Nursery and Pocklington Prep School through the Senior School to the Sixth Form. William Wilberforce is among its former pupils.

Boarding is offered from Year 7. Pupils follow a broad curriculum leading to GCSEs, and the Sixth Form offers 28 courses alongside six enrichment courses, based around a redeveloped Sixth Form Centre designed as a university-style space for study and socialising.

Boarding at Pocklington School

Around 80 pupils board. Full boarders stay seven nights a week, with optional exeat weekends, and the school also offers weekly boarding, a weekly boarding plus option that includes Sunday nights, part-time boarding of one to three nights and occasional nights. International students may join for several years or for one or two terms.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Senior boarders in Years 11 to 13 live in two single-sex houses: Fenwick-Smith, a boys' house opened in 2007 with spacious study areas, and Faircote, the girls' house, which combines traditional character with modern facilities. Younger boarders are accommodated in age-appropriate junior boarding. Each house is run by a resident houseparent supported by a trained boarding team.

Boarding Life

Weekday evenings balance supervised study with swimming, sport, cooking, arts and crafts, climbing and cinema nights, plus events such as international theme nights and barbecues. On Saturdays boarders play sports fixtures or join an enrichment programme exploring the culture and history of East Yorkshire. Sundays bring trips to beaches, theme parks and ice rinks, or on-site crafts and archery, and Sixth Formers may visit York.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support Department, led by the SENCo, includes dyslexia specialists and provides literacy and numeracy interventions and subject-specific support at GCSE, with the school naming autism, dyscalculia and ADHD among the needs it supports. Houseparents work alongside a wellbeing team, and a purpose-built Health and Wellbeing Centre looks after pupils' health.

International boarders at Pocklington School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
