Port Regis Overview

Port Regis is an independent, co-educational day and boarding prep school for children aged 2 to 13, set in 150 acres of parkland at Motcombe Park, between Shaftesbury and Gillingham in north Dorset. Founded in London in 1881, the school settled at Motcombe in 1947 after several moves, and its main building, known as the Mansion, is the Victorian Motcombe House.

Prep School pupils follow a broad curriculum with strengths in sport, STEAM and the creative arts. Most stay until 13, when they move on to a wide range of senior schools, including Bryanston, Canford, Sherborne, Marlborough and Eton.

Boarding at Port Regis

Around 140 pupils board, most of them as full boarders, and around 100 children are in school at weekends. Full boarding is available from Year 3, alongside flexi boarding of two to four nights a week. Boarders include local and London families, forces families and pupils from more than a dozen countries, from Italy to Japan, and exeat weekends can be spent at school for an additional charge.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Younger boarders aged 7 to 11 live in the Mansion, where girls and boys have dormitories and bathrooms on separate floors but share games rooms and sitting rooms. Girls aged 11 to 13 then move to Grosvenor and boys to Prichard, where each boarder has a private cubicle with a bed, basin, desk and storage within a shared dorm. Houseparents, housemothers and resident gap year students staff each house.

Boarding Life

Activities run every evening after supper, from sport and inter-dorm challenges to craft nights, mindfulness sessions and film nights. Saturday mornings bring the PR Plus enrichment programme, including a mini Duke of Edinburgh scheme, bike mechanics and lifeguard qualifications, followed by assembly, lunch and sports fixtures. Sundays combine outings, swimming and cookery with quieter time.

Academic and Pastoral Support

A specialist department of trained teachers supports dyslexia and other learning needs, and the school also has a speech and language therapist on its staff. The Good Schools Guide lists support for dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD and autism. A Health Centre with a qualified nurse is staffed day and night, and two independent listeners are available to boarders.

International boarders at Port Regis are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Information for International Students and Parents

Port Regis accepts international boarders from Year 3, at age 7, through to Year 8, with Years 3, 5 and 7 the most common points of entry. Some overseas pupils stay for a single academic year, while others complete their prep education and move on to UK senior schools at 13. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Port Regis does not publish minimum English levels by year of entry. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Pupils whose first language is not English are assessed on arrival and follow an individual programme with the EAL department, in small groups or one to one, joining mainstream classes as soon as their English allows. Pupils staying for one year can work towards Cambridge English qualifications such as KET, PET or FCE.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa, and Port Regis notes that this route also applies to pupils from the EU, EEA and Switzerland. Port Regis is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents before the student travels. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement. The school coordinates airport travel at the start and end of term, with unaccompanied children escorted by DBS-checked drivers through to passport control.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Port Regis boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Port Regis's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Port Regis, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Port Regis is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Port Regis may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
