Queenswood Overview

Queenswood is an independent day and boarding school for girls aged 11 to 18 on a rural campus at Brookmans Park, near Hatfield in Hertfordshire, around 20 minutes from central London. The school has around 480 pupils, including more than 90 in the Sixth Form. Founded in 1894 with Methodist roots, it moved to its present site in 1925.

Girls follow a broad curriculum to GCSE and then A Levels in the Sixth Form, where students also choose elective courses and take on leadership roles across the school. Music, drama, dance, art and sport are central to school life.

Boarding at Queenswood

More than half of the girls board, and the school community includes residents of more than 20 countries. Families can choose full boarding, where girls stay at school at weekends, weekly boarding with weekends at home, or regular flexi boarding for one to three nights a week. International students can also join for one or two terms of full boarding with intensive English.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Girls in Years 7 and 8 live in Stamp House, home to up to 48 boarders in shared rooms, with room partners changing each term and three full-time resident staff. Years 9 to 11 board in Centre, where Years 9 and 10 share rooms and Year 11 full boarders have their own bedroom and study space, with a cinema, music room and kitchen. In the Sixth Form, Lower Sixth girls have a single study bedroom or share with one other, and Upper Sixth girls have single rooms near kitchens and common rooms.

Boarding Life

Boarding gives structure to the day, balancing study, co-curricular activities and downtime, with evening tutors on hand to help. At weekends boarders join trips to London, Oxford, Brighton and other places of interest, meals out at local restaurants and on-site activities, while some weekends are kept free for study and time with friends.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The SEND team works from the Personalised Learning Centre, a separate building on campus, and the school reports support for needs including dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, autism and mental health difficulties. Sixth Form students have the Bellman Sixth Form Centre for study and social time and a dedicated Wellbeing Centre for additional support.

Every international boarder at Queenswood must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Queenswood

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Queenswood website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Queenswood welcomes international boarders from Year 7 to the Lower Sixth, for a short programme, a term or two, or their whole senior school education. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Queenswood sets minimum English levels, based on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR):

  • Year 7 (age 11): CEFR A2
  • Year 8 (age 12): CEFR A2+ to B1
  • Year 9 (age 13): CEFR B1
  • Year 10 (age 14): CEFR B1+ to B2
  • Year 11 (age 15): CEFR B2
  • Year 12 (age 16): CEFR B2+

EAL pupils usually have one individual and one group lesson a week, charged as an extra, with IELTS preparation in the Sixth Form, where girls aim for C1.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Queenswood is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and introduces families to a visa consultant once a place is accepted, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Queenswood requires every overseas boarder to have an English-speaking guardian resident in the UK, appointed through an AEGIS or BSA approved guardianship company or, where criteria are met, a close relative. Guardians must be over 25, not in full-time education and within 50 miles or two hours of the school; visa sponsorship is confirmed only once guardian arrangements are approved.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Queenswood boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

Queenswood offers international girls one term or two terms of full boarding combined with intensive English, and a short summer immersion programme with extra EAL and excursions. Families considering a shorter stay can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Queenswood's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Queenswood, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Queenswood is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Queenswood may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
