Read School Overview

Read School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in the village of Drax, near Selby in North Yorkshire, educating around 250 pupils aged 4 to 18 on one rural site. The school is divided into a Pre-Prep (Lower Junior School), a Prep School for Years 3 to 6 (Upper Junior School), the Senior School and the Sixth Form. The M62, M18 and A1 are all close by.

Founded in 1667 by Charles Reade, the school is a standalone Church of England foundation that built a large boarding house in 1905. Pupils take GCSEs in the Senior School, and the Sixth Form offers a combination of A Levels and BTEC qualifications in small teaching groups, with most students progressing to university.

Boarding at Read School

Read School runs a small boarding community of UK and international pupils, with recent boarders coming from countries including China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Japan, Ukraine, Spain and Nigeria. Families can choose full boarding seven nights a week, weekly boarding from Monday to Friday, flexi boarding for two to four nights, or occasional nights when beds are available.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boys live in Norfolk House, where most bedrooms are twin rooms and single rooms are kept for Sixth Formers and prefects. The house has a kitchen and a large games and television room, and new pupils are given a buddy. Girls board in Selden House, in the older part of the main building, where younger girls share with two or three others and older girls and prefects may have single study bedrooms. Houseparents and resident staff provide care around the clock.

Boarding Life

Evenings include supervised prep sessions supported by house staff. Most boarders play in school sports fixtures on Saturdays, while Sundays are kept for rest and recreation, with afternoon outings such as horse riding, bowling, cinema trips and shopping, as well as cultural visits and outdoor activities.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Inclusive Learning Department supports pupils with needs including dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, autism and speech and language difficulties, through individual tuition, small groups and in-class help. Sixth Formers have their own centre with personal workstations and a careers hub, and a pastoral team gives international boarders extra support in their first weeks.

Every international boarder at Read School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Read School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Read School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Read School offers full boarding to international pupils in both the Prep and Senior years, from around age 8 through to the Upper Sixth, with separate full boarding arrangements for Prep and Senior pupils. Overseas pupils join the Prep School, the Senior School or the Sixth Form, and the school can arrange escorted transport to and from the airport. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Read School does not publish a minimum English level for entry, and applicants complete an assessment of their current level rather than an entrance examination. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. The EAL Department teaches overseas pupils individually or in small classes of three or four, helps with other subjects, and prepares students for Cambridge PET and First Certificate, with Upper Sixth students usually taking IELTS.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Read School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies once the required guardian details have been supplied. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Read School requires every overseas pupil, including those from the EU, to have a guardian resident in the UK who is over 25 and is not a full-time student. The guardian may be a family member or an AEGIS accredited guardianship organisation, and is responsible for the pupil during school holidays, weekend exeats, illness or an early return home.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Read School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Read School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Read School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Read School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Read School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
