Rishworth School Overview

Rishworth School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in the village of Rishworth, near Sowerby Bridge and Halifax in West Yorkshire, for pupils aged 10 to 19. Founded in 1724 through the Wheelwright legacy, it occupies an 80-acre site in the Ryburn Valley and remains a charity that reinvests all of its income in the school.

Pupils work towards GCSEs, and the Sixth Form offers A Levels alongside BTEC courses and the Extended Project Qualification. Enrichment includes more than 80 clubs and activities, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and a football pathway run with the Huddersfield Town AFC Foundation.

Boarding at Rishworth School

Boarding is open to students aged 11 to 18, and the small boarding community includes students from around 11 nations. Families can choose full, weekly or flexi boarding, or a combination of these, and international students can also join for an immersion stay of two weeks to a full term.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boys and girls board separately, with Redmires holding the boys' accommodation and Ryburn the girls', and Wheelwright as a further boarding house. There are no dormitories: most boarders have a single study bedroom, while some younger pupils first share a larger room with one other student. Houseparents and boarding staff run each house, a Head Matron oversees health care, and Sixth Form students serve as Heads of House.

Boarding Life

Weekday evenings begin with dinner at six and supervised prep, followed by activities or free time before a nine o'clock roll call. Boarders stay in school at weekends, with brunch, time for homework and trips each weekend, planned at a weekly boarding meeting. Older students can visit Halifax, Leeds or Manchester with permission, and the school arranges airport and station transport at the start and end of each term and half term.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Classes are small, homework support runs in the library on weekdays, and English for Academic Purposes teaching is available. Sixth Form students have a refurbished Sixth Form Centre and a careers and higher education programme, and boarders can speak in confidence to an Independent Listener. Learning support and pastoral care are provided; families should discuss individual needs with British Guardianship.

Every international boarder at Rishworth School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Rishworth School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. Information for International Students and Parents

Rishworth School accepts international boarders from Year 7 to the Sixth Form, with Year 7 and Year 12 the most common points of entry. Most students join in September, and mid-year entry is considered when places allow. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

International applicants take an English proficiency test, but minimum CEFR or IELTS levels are not published. EAL support is available. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Rishworth School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and offers visa support, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Rishworth School's guardian policy requires every Child Student visa holder under 18 to have an appointed UK guardian, unless the student lives with a parent holding a Parent of a Child Student visa. The guardian must be over 25, live permanently in the UK, and be accredited through AEGIS or the Boarding Schools' Association or complete a criminal record declaration. Guardians must be available in an emergency and provide safe accommodation during holidays.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Rishworth School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

Rishworth School's immersion programme for international students aged 11 to 18 runs from a minimum of two weeks to a half term or a full term. Visiting students live in the boarding houses on full boarding arrangements, follow the normal timetable, join weekend excursions and are paired with a student buddy. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.
