Learn More →Rossall School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Fleetwood, Lancashire, educating children from three months to 18 years on a 160-acre coastal campus on the Fylde coast, north of Blackpool. Founded in 1844, the school has a nursery, pre-prep and prep school, a senior school and a Sixth Form on one site.
Pupils take GCSE and IGCSE courses before choosing A Levels, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, taught since 1998, or BTEC courses in the Sixth Form. Specialist academies, including football, golf and piano, run alongside the timetable.
Boarding is offered from age 7, in Year 3, through to the end of the Sixth Form. Around 30 per cent of pupils come from overseas, representing more than 50 countries. Families can choose full boarding or weekly boarding, with flexible boarding by the night for day pupils, and international students can also join for a short residential immersion course in the summer term.
There are nine boarding houses. Anchor is a co-educational junior house for boarders aged 11 to 14, while senior students aged 13 to 18 live in three girls' houses, Rose, Wren and Dolphin, or five boys' houses, Maltese Cross, Mitre Fleur de Lys, Spread Eagle, Pelican and Dragon. Senior houses offer single, double and triple bedrooms, with a common room, games room and kitchen in each. Every house is led by houseparents and a deputy, supported by tutors.
After tea and registration, boarders complete two hours of supervised prep each evening, followed by free time before age-related curfews. Weekend trips range from kayaking and hiking in the Lake District to visits to Manchester, Liverpool and London, with overnight trips to cities such as Edinburgh and Dublin. Junior boarders have their own programme of outings.
Learning support lessons are available, and the Good Schools Guide records provision for autism, ADHD and dyslexia. The Medical Centre is staffed by registered nurses and holds a daily surgery with the school doctor. Sixth Form students receive careers and university guidance, including support for Oxbridge, overseas and US college applications.

Rossall School accepts international boarders from Year 3 to Year 13, through direct entry for students with strong English or through programmes with built-in English support. These include Key Stage 3 and GCSE routes with English support and Pre-A Level and Pre-IB courses for older students. Most students start in September, and the international programmes also admit students in January and April. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Rossall does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS scores. International applicants usually sit an English test, which determines whether a student enters directly or joins a supported programme. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Direct entry students in Years 7 to 12 receive around four hours of English support a week, and Year 13 around three. Students can work towards Cambridge English qualifications and IELTS.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Rossall School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Rossall School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
