Learn More →Royal High School Bath is an independent day and boarding school for girls in Bath, Somerset, educating pupils aged 9 to 18 on its Lansdown Road site within walking distance of the city centre. It was formed in 1998 by the merger of the Royal School, founded in 1864, and Bath High School, founded in 1875. The school is part of the Girls' Day School Trust, a national group of independent girls' schools, and is the only school in the Trust to offer boarding.
Girls study Latin from Year 7, progress through Key Stage 3 to GCSEs and take up to four A Levels in the Sixth Form, alongside leadership programmes such as Model United Nations and the Bath Student Parliament.
Boarding is open to girls from Year 7 to Year 13. Around 100 girls board, most of them full boarders, and around one in five pupils comes from outside the UK. Weekly boarding and occasional stays are also offered.
Girls aged 11 to 16 board on the top floor of the neo-gothic main building, in split-level bedrooms with mezzanine sleeping areas, close to common rooms and quiet study spaces. Sixth Form boarders have twin study bedrooms, their own communal areas and kitchen facilities. Boarding staff live in and provide support around the clock, and catering runs seven days a week.
Boarders use the fitness suite, recording studio and library in the evenings and at weekends. Saturday mornings bring a sport for all programme, and the termly weekend programme mixes baking, outdoor film nights and zorbing with trips to the Roman Baths and the Bath Festival, London theatre visits and climbing in the Avon Gorge. Staff also help girls join local sports clubs.
The learning support department helps a small number of girls with mild specific learning difficulties, particularly dyslexia, and some autistic pupils, from individual learning profiles to one-to-one tuition. English as an Additional Language classes run in groups and individually. Pastoral care centres on a wellbeing programme, supported by an in-house careers adviser.

Royal High School Bath accepts international boarders from Year 7. The main entry points are Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 and Year 12, with most students joining in September, and entry to other year groups is considered individually. Alongside the standard GCSE and A Level route, the school offers an accelerated one-year GCSE course. Bath is around 90 minutes from London Paddington by train, and Bristol Airport is the nearest airport. English is assessed for every applicant. Students joining the Sixth Form are expected to have an English level equivalent to IELTS 6.0, while younger applicants need good written and spoken English for their age. Students whose first language is not English are assessed again on arrival and receive English as an Additional Language support in small groups or individually, with their progress monitored throughout their time at the school.

Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time.
