Ryde School with Upper Chine Overview

Ryde School with Upper Chine is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Ryde on the Isle of Wight, educating pupils from 2 to 18 years. Founded in 1921 as Ryde Grammar School, it merged in 1994 with Upper Chine School, a girls' school established in 1914, and is the only boarding school on the island. Around 720 pupils are taught on the Queen's Road campus, centred on the Grade II listed Westmont building.

Boarding is offered from age 11. Pupils take GCSEs in the Senior School, and the Sixth Form offers a choice between A Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Hovercraft and FastCat crossings link Ryde with Southsea and Portsmouth in 10 to 25 minutes.

Boarding at Ryde School with Upper Chine

Boarders from at least 12 nationalities live alongside British boarders. Full boarding is the most common pattern, with more than 90 per cent of boarders staying each weekend, and full boarders can remain at school during one-week half terms. Weekly and flexi boarding are also available.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Younger boarders in Years 7 to 10 live in Millfield House, a renovated Victorian villa with a large garden and sea views, with single, twin and triple bedrooms, most en-suite, a central kitchen and prep areas. Boarders in Years 11 to 13 live in Centenary House, a purpose-built house for up to 68 students in single and twin rooms, most en-suite, with sea-facing study rooms. Both houses are co-educational, with separate sleeping corridors for boys and girls, and each is led by a resident Housemaster supported by resident boarding tutors.

Boarding Life

Boarding tutors cover evening and weekend duties, and older boarders can cook for themselves in the house kitchen at weekends. Boarding staff run an organised activity every Sunday, shaped by boarders' suggestions, from surfing, climbing and horse riding on the beach to trips to Portsmouth, Robin Hill Country Park and Thorpe Park.

Academic and Pastoral Support

New pupils complete a dyslexia screener, and the Learning Support department provides one-to-one or small-group sessions for pupils with specific learning difficulties, using structured, multi-sensory methods. Boarders have access to the Health and Wellbeing Centre, with the School Matron and Director of Health and Wellbeing on hand.
