Learn More →S. Anselm's School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school on the edge of Bakewell, Derbyshire, in the Peak District. It educates children from nursery age to 13 through its Nursery and Pre-School, Pre-Prep, Junior Prep (Years 3 to 5) and Senior Prep (Years 6 to 8). Founded in 1888 as a boys' boarding preparatory school, it admitted girls from 1976 and is now run as an independent charitable school.
The school is non-selective, and from Year 6 pupils are taught by specialist subject teachers, with French, Spanish and Mandarin on the curriculum. Facilities include a sports hall, an outdoor swimming pool and a 240-seat theatre. Pupils leave after Year 8 for a wide range of senior schools, including Eton, Harrow and Rugby, and the school is developing its own Senior School leading to GCSEs.
S. Anselm's offers full, weekly and flexi boarding from Year 3 to Year 8. Full boarders stay through the week and at weekends, while weekly boarders go home on Friday. The boarding community is small and includes pupils from overseas, mostly in the upper prep years, who have internet access to keep in touch with family in other time zones.
Boarders sleep in dormitories within the historic main school house and share a common room used for games and a weekly film night. House parents look after the boarders, supported by boarding staff and an evening duty team on hand from 5pm to 10pm.
After lessons, boarders join clubs before supper, followed by supervised prep, music practice and a calm bedtime routine led by the house parents. Weekends make use of the setting, with Sunday walks in the Peak District, trips to nearby towns and cities, visits to Chatsworth House and ice skating.
Specialist SEND teachers give support in class, one to one or in small groups, and Individual Education Plans are reviewed at least twice a year. The Good Schools Guide records support for specific learning difficulties and autism. A Speech and Language Therapist, an integrative counsellor and a registered paediatric nurse complete the support team.
International boarders at S. Anselm's School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official S. Anselm's School website.
S. Anselm's School accepts boarders from Year 3, at age 7, to Year 8, at age 12. International boarders are mostly in the upper prep years, Years 6 to 8, where specialist subject teaching prepares pupils for entry to a British senior school at 13. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. S. Anselm's does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS levels or a separate English as an Additional Language programme, so families of pupils who are still developing their English should discuss their child's needs with British Guardianship before a place is sought. Classes are small, which allows teachers to give each pupil individual attention.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. S. Anselm's School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and as an independent fee-paying school it can sponsor pupils of prep school age, since children aged 4 to 15 on this route must attend an independent school. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement. For a boarder of prep school age, the guardian's role is especially practical, covering travel to and from Bakewell, care during school breaks and close contact with house parents.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. S. Anselm's School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
