Learn More →Scarborough College is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school on Filey Road in Scarborough, on the North Yorkshire coast. Pupils are educated from Pre-School through the Prep School, which has shared the site since 2000, and the Senior School to the Sixth Form, with boarding offered from Year 7. Founded in 1896 as a boys' boarding school, the College admitted girls from 1972.
Senior School pupils follow GCSE and IGCSE courses, with Spanish and French taught from Year 7, and the Sixth Form teaches the International Baccalaureate Diploma rather than A Levels. A BTEC in Sport can be combined with a reduced number of IB subjects. Around 50 new students join the Sixth Form each year, most of them international boarders. Sports facilities include an all-weather hockey pitch, tennis courts and a running track.
Boarders make up about a third of the Senior School. Around a third of the boarding community is British, and international boarders typically come from about 30 countries, with mainland Europe, and Germany in particular, providing the largest groups. Boarding is offered as full boarding, and weekend activities and trips are included in the boarding fee.
Boarders live in four Arts and Crafts villas within a ten-minute walk of the main campus. Willersley House is for younger girls and Denys Crews House for younger boys, while Lodge House is for senior boys and Weaponness House is a co-educational senior house. Most pupils share en-suite rooms in threes or fours, with some single rooms for sixth formers. Each house has a lounge, kitchen, garden and games, and is run by houseparents with a live-in assistant.
Boarders eat in the main dining hall, and academic tutors visit the houses on four weekday evenings to support study. Evening activities run during the week alongside an extensive weekend programme, and pupils from Year 10 may go into Scarborough in small groups.
The College screens pupils for dyslexia and other learning needs, and senior teaching assistants provide one-to-one or small-group support alongside small classes. A School Counsellor is available by self-referral, and the Yorkshire Grit programme builds resilience and confidence in the Senior School.

Scarborough College accepts boarders from Year 7, at age 11, through to the end of the Sixth Form. Many international students join in Year 12 for the two-year IB Diploma, when around 50 new students, most of them boarders from overseas, start in the Sixth Form, while younger students join the Senior School for GCSE and IGCSE courses. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Scarborough College expects a strong command of English from students joining its GCSE and IGCSE courses or the IB Diploma:
New students can take a diagnostic English test on arrival, and English as an additional language support is available within the IB for students who need it.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Scarborough College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies once a place is confirmed and guardianship details are in place, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Scarborough College requires every boarder whose family lives outside the UK to have a UK-based guardian, and the guardian's details must be provided before visa documents are issued.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Scarborough College, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Scarborough College is finalised. Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Scarborough College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
