Learn More →Sevenoaks School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Sevenoaks, Kent, educating more than 1,000 pupils aged 11 to 18, around 30 minutes by train from central London. Founded in 1432, it is one of the oldest non-denominational schools in the country and opened its first international Sixth Form boarding house in 1962. The school is part of the Sevenoaks Family of Schools, alongside Solefield School and Bickley Park School.
Pupils take GCSEs, and all of the 500 or so Sixth Form students follow the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme: Sevenoaks was the first HMC school to teach the IB Diploma exclusively.
More than 350 boarders from over 30 countries live in eight boarding houses, and boarding places are offered only at 13+ and 16+. Boarders can stay seven days a week, and about three quarters remain each weekend. Houses close on five exeat weekends a year, when there is no Saturday school.
Boys board in School House, Johnsons and Aisher, for ages 13 to 18, or in the International Centre, a Sixth Form house. Girls board in Sennocke House, Park Grange and New House, for ages 13 to 18, or in the Girls' International House for Sixth Form students. Younger boarders share rooms, often of three or four, while sixth formers usually have single or double rooms, many of them en suite. Academic tutors share evening and weekend duties in each house.
Each house sets aside time for evening prep, supervised for younger pupils. Midweek events include international evenings and theatre trips. At weekends boarders use the Sennocke Centre's sports hall, pool and gym and The Space performing arts centre, and each half term brings a Sunday trip, such as paintballing or ice skating, chosen with input from the Boarders' Council. Sixth Form boarders may visit London with permission.
Learning support is aimed at pupils with mild needs, including dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and autism, and the school also supports students with hearing impairment, although it is not suited to pupils who need substantial help. A Health Centre staffed by nurses is open around the clock. Every pupil has a tutor who is the main link with parents.
Every international boarder at Sevenoaks School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Sevenoaks School website.
Sevenoaks School admits international boarders at two points: 13+, into Year 9, and 16+, into the IB Diploma Sixth Form. Pupils who join at 11+ attend as day pupils, as boarding is only offered from 13. International applicants follow the same timetable as UK candidates, students join in September, and the school sets no fixed limit on international places while aiming for a balance of nationalities. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
All subjects are taught in English, so a high level of fluency is expected. Sevenoaks recommends an upper intermediate level, equivalent to CEFR B2, ALTE level 3 or IELTS 5 to 6, for international applicants at 13+ and 16+. Formal English qualifications are welcome but not required. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Sevenoaks School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and sponsors boarding students, though not day students, for this visa. A visa coordinator guides families through the process, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Sevenoaks School requires every student whose parents live outside the UK, or far from the school, to have a named guardian living in the UK. The guardian must be at least 25 years old and live close enough to the school to carry out the role, and the school asks guardians to confirm their responsibilities in writing. Boarders stay with family, guardians or friends during the five exeat weekends, and the school points families to AEGIS for accredited guardianship organisations.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Sevenoaks School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Sevenoaks School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Sevenoaks School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Sevenoaks School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
