Sherborne Girls Overview

Sherborne Girls is an independent boarding and day school for girls on the western edge of Sherborne, a market town in north Dorset. Founded in 1899 on an Anglican foundation, it has been part of the Sherborne Schools Group since 2024, alongside Sherborne Boys, Sherborne Prep and Hanford Prep.

Girls join from Year 8 and stay to 18. A broad first year, including Latin and French or Spanish, leads to GCSEs and IGCSEs. The Sixth Form of around 180 students chooses from about 30 A Level subjects, with Core Maths and the Extended Project Qualification as options, and some lessons are shared with Sherborne Boys.

Boarding at Sherborne Girls

Sherborne Girls is a full boarding school, with around 90 per cent of pupils boarding seven days a week and close to 400 boarders in all. About 15 per cent of pupils are overseas nationals from around 20 countries, and a further 10 per cent come from British expatriate families.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Girls in Years 9 to 12 belong to one of five houses: Aldhelmsted West, Dun Holme, Kenelm, Reader Harris and Wingfield Digby. In the Upper Sixth every girl moves to Mulliner, a dedicated final-year house with greater independence. The youngest boarders share four-bedded rooms with en-suite shower rooms. A Housemistress, Matrons and Tutors run each house, and girls eat with resident staff in the house dining room.

Boarding Life

Saturdays start with sports fixtures and end with socials, including joint evenings with Sherborne Boys. Sundays begin with a later brunch, followed by trips and activities such as outdoor pursuits, leadership weekends and inter-house competitions. Theatre trips, live music, formal suppers, bowling, cinema outings and sessions at the Oxley Sports Centre complete the programme.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support Department runs one-to-one and small group sessions on literacy, memory and executive function, and visiting specialists offer ADHD coaching and speech and language therapy. A Health Centre staffed by a nurse around the clock, counselling, a chaplaincy team and a wellbeing programme support pastoral care, and every Sixth Former has a tutor for subject choices and university guidance.

International boarders at Sherborne Girls are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Sherborne Girls

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Sherborne Girls website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Sherborne Girls accepts international boarders from Year 8, the first year of the school. The main entry point is 13+ in Year 9, when around 65 girls join and move into the senior boarding houses; places at 14+ in Year 10 are offered occasionally, and there is a small intake into the Sixth Form at 16+. Most international students join in September, although offers can be made through the year when space allows. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Sherborne Girls does not publish minimum IELTS or CEFR scores. Applicants whose first language is not English have their English assessed during admissions, which also shows whether EAL support will be needed. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. EAL tuition is tailored to each girl, individually or in small groups, and is charged in addition to fees. Bilingual girls can also take qualifications in their other languages where suitable.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Sherborne Girls is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents once a place has been accepted. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement. At the start and end of each term the school runs a supervised coach to Heathrow, timed to suit most flights, and house Matrons help girls arrange travel before exeats and holidays, so the guardian is closely involved in travel plans.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Sherborne Girls boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Sherborne Girls's specific requirements as part of your application. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Sherborne Girls, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Sherborne Girls is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Sherborne Girls may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
