Sidcot School Overview

Sidcot School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Winscombe, North Somerset, educating pupils from age 3 to 18 across its Junior School, Senior School and Sixth Form. Its 150-acre campus lies in the Mendip Hills, near Bristol and Bath. A Quaker school with a history of more than 300 years, Sidcot welcomes students of all faiths and builds its community around curiosity, equality, empathy, sustainability and responsibility.

Senior pupils work towards GCSEs, and international students can also join a dedicated Year 11 Pathway. Sixth Form students choose between A Levels, BTEC qualifications and the International Baccalaureate Diploma, with the Extended Project Qualification and the Leiths Extended Certificate in Professional Cookery also available.

Boarding at Sidcot School

Boarding runs from Year 7, known at Sidcot as the Third Form, to the end of the Sixth Form. Most boarders are full boarders, and weekly or flexible boarding may be arranged in some cases. Students from more than 30 nationalities join each year, and prayer spaces, halal and kosher food and transport to places of worship support students of different faiths.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in four houses with broadly similar facilities: School House Girls, School House Boys, Newcombe House and Wing House. Each has a common room with television, games console and Wi-Fi, and a small kitchen open at set times. Younger boarders share with two or three others, Lower Sixth students with one or two, and Upper Sixth students have their own study-bedroom or share with one other. A housemaster or housemistress leads each house.

Boarding Life

Houses run their own weekday activities, and evenings bring badminton, basketball and swimming in the Sports Centre, riding, and drama, art, photography and music in the Arts Centre. On Saturday mornings specialists lead sessions such as cooking, sport, music and UCAS workshops, and regular trips go to Bristol, Bath, theme parks, theatres and historic sites, alongside abseiling and mountain biking.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Sidcot is CReSTeD registered for dyslexia, and its Learning Support Department offers one-to-one tuition in literacy and maths, with classroom support from learning support assistants. Sixth Formers have a purpose-built centre and their own cafe, and each receives one-to-one guidance from a progression adviser.

Every international boarder at Sidcot School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Sidcot School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Sidcot School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Sidcot School accepts international boarders into the Senior School, the Year 11 Pathway, the A Level and BTEC Sixth Form and the IB Diploma, with boarding available from Year 7. Students from more than 30 countries join the school each year. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Sidcot sets a minimum English level for each programme, based on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR):

  • Senior School and Year 11 Pathway: CEFR B1
  • Sixth Form A Levels: CEFR B2
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma: CEFR C1

English is assessed as part of the application, and a recognised qualification such as IELTS or IGCSE English can stand in for the school's own English assessment when the score meets the requirement. Once enrolled, international students can follow an English as a second language programme, and Sixth Form students can prepare for IELTS.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Sidcot School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) to students with non-UK passports once UKVI criteria are met, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Sidcot School requires every international student to have a UK educational guardian, and guardian details must be confirmed before the student starts. The school does not publish distance or age criteria, so British Guardianship confirms its specific requirements as part of placement.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Sidcot School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Sidcot School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Sidcot School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Sidcot School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Sidcot School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
