St Catherine's School Overview

St Catherine's School is an independent day and boarding school for girls in the village of Bramley, about three miles south of Guildford in Surrey. Founded in 1885 as a boarding and day school, it educates girls from age 2 to 18, with a Pre-School and Prep School for ages 2 to 11, a Senior School for ages 11 to 16 and a Sixth Form known as The 6.

Boarding is offered from age 11. Girls follow GCSE courses in the Senior School and choose from around 28 A Level subjects in the Sixth Form. The school runs more than 140 clubs.

Boarding at St Catherine's School

Boarders come from more than 19 nationalities, with girls from France, Germany and Spain among them. Families can choose full, weekly, flexi or occasional boarding. Full boarders stay in school through the week and at weekends. The school also welcomes girls from Europe and further afield for short language immersion stays.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Junior House is home to girls in Years 7 and 8, who sleep in themed dormitories for two to five girls and change rooms each half term. Senior House, on the top floor of the original 1885 building, accommodates Years 9 to 11 in study bedrooms for two to four girls, and Sixth Form boarders live in The 6, which has 44 twin bedrooms shared with a chosen roommate. Each house is run by a resident boarding housemistress, supported by resident staff and a tutor team.

Boarding Life

Younger boarders complete supervised prep each evening in their own prep room, while seniors work in the library or their rooms and Sixth Formers have a quiet study period in The 6 or the Sixth Form library. Weekends for full boarders are filled with activities, including trips, theme park visits and sports events.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Inclusive Learning department, led by the SENCO, supports girls with specific learning difficulties and other learning differences through weekly one-to-one study skills lessons and exam access arrangements, and the Good Schools Guide records provision for dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, autism and hearing impairment. All girls take Thinking Skills lessons from Year 7, and a resident nurse is on call 24 hours a day.

Every international boarder at St Catherine's School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at St Catherine's School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official St Catherine's School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

St Catherine's School admits international boarders at three main points: 11+ entry into Year 7, 13+ entry into Year 9 and 16+ entry into the Sixth Form. Most girls join in September, and the school considers applications at other times when places are available. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

The school does not publish IELTS or CEFR levels. Girls need a good standard of written and spoken English before they join, particularly for Sixth Form study, and English is assessed as part of the application. Before arrival, the English department suggests wider reading for overseas boarders, and qualified EAL staff can assess individual needs and arrange short support courses, charged as an extra. British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. St Catherine's School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies to overseas boarders; it does not sponsor day pupils. The school asks for a copy of the passport and the UK guardian's details, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

St Catherine's requires parents of full boarders to appoint a UK guardian as a priority. The guardian must be over 21, and preferably over 25, and must be contactable at all times during term and during holidays when the girl remains in the UK. Where no relative or family friend can take on the role, the school suggests an AEGIS accredited guardianship organisation.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for St Catherine's School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. St Catherine's School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
