St David's College Overview

St David's College is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Llandudno, Conwy, on the North Wales coast, educating around 250 pupils aged 9 to 19 across Years 5 to 13. Founded in 1965 with a Christian ethos and based at Gloddaeth Hall, the school is inspected by Estyn and combines academic study with a strong outdoor education programme.

Classes are small, averaging around 12. Pupils take GCSEs in Year 11, then choose from A Levels, BTEC Level 3 Diplomas and other vocational courses in the Sixth Form, often adding the Extended Project Qualification.

Boarding at St David's College

More than a third of pupils are full boarders, drawn from Wales, the rest of the UK and overseas, including families in the armed forces. Boarding starts in Year 5, and new boarders are paired with an older buddy. Some boarders go home on occasional weekends, while those who stay join the weekend programme.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boys board in Snowdon, Tryfan and Cader, girls in Augusta, and younger boys in Hettie, with up to 35 boarders of mixed ages in each house. Older pupils have single or double rooms, while younger boys share in rooms of three or four. House parents or housemasters lead each house, and all senior boarding staff are qualified teachers.

Boarding Life

When lessons end, younger boarders have supervised prep in their houses, while Sixth Formers study independently. Evening activities include climbing, bouldering, sailing, canoeing, archery and orienteering. Saturdays bring an activities programme and sports fixtures, two outdoor education options run on each weekend day, and boarders in Years 5 to 8 go on off-site trips. Sundays begin with brunch and end with evening Chapel.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Every pupil is assessed in literacy and numeracy on entry, which shapes an Individual Learning Plan. The Cadogan Learning Support Centre supports dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and co-occurring ADHD, speech and language needs and some autistic pupils, with specialist teachers, therapists, a counsellor and an educational psychologist. Additional one-to-one sessions carry an extra charge.

Every international boarder at St David's College must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at St David's College

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official St David's College website.

Information for International Students and Parents

St David's College accepts international boarders from age 9, in Year 5, through to the Sixth Form, so students can join in the junior years, during the GCSE years or at the start of the two-year Sixth Form course. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

St David's College looks for a basic level of English that allows a student to follow the curriculum, rather than a fixed CEFR or IELTS score. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. A specialist EAL department teaches international pupils to develop their written and spoken English and supports them across their subjects, and EAL tuition is included in the fees.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. St David's College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies once a place is accepted and works with an immigration partner that guides families through the process, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

St David's College requires every international pupil to have a guardian based in the UK, and this is a condition of accepting a place. No distance or minimum age rule is published. Boarders usually spend exeat weekends at home or with their guardian, so the guardian plays a regular part in the school year.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for St David's College boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with St David's College is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. St David's College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
