Learn More →St Leonards is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in St Andrews, Fife, for pupils aged 4 to 18 on a historic seaside campus. Founded in 1877 as a girls' school, it moved in 1883 to the former site of St Leonard's College of the University of St Andrews and began admitting boys in 1999. It is one of only two schools in Scotland to teach the International Baccalaureate throughout.
Pupils follow the IB Primary Years Programme to Year 6 and the Middle Years Programme in Years 7 to 9, then take GCSEs and IGCSEs in Years 10 and 11, with a one-year Pre-IB course for those joining in Year 11. In Years 12 and 13 students choose the IB Diploma or the IB Career-related Programme.
Around 150 pupils board, from more than 30 nationalities, and boarding is open from age 10. Most board full time, with weekly and flexi boarding also available.
There are three boarding houses. St Rule is a co-educational house for younger boarders in Years 6 to 11, where the Housemaster lives on site with resident and non-resident tutors. Sixth Form boarders move to Bishopshall for girls or Ollerenshaw for boys, each with its own Housemistress or Housemaster. Study bedrooms range from singles to twins, with dormitories in St Rule, and each house has social space and a kitchen.
Weekday meals are served in the school dining hall, and weekend meals are cooked in the houses. Evenings after prep and weekends are given to house activities and trips, led by the Head of Boarding. Outings range from beach walks and karaoke to day trips to Edinburgh, watersports and ice skating. There are no exeat weekends, and boarders may spend weekends at home or with local day families with parental permission.
The Support for Learning team works with pupils who have dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADD or ADHD, and autism spectrum conditions, through one-to-one and paired lessons, small groups and study skills clinics. Learning hubs operate in both the Junior and Senior sections, alongside a Supported Study classroom. A staffed Wellbeing Hub gives pupils a calm space to talk.

St Leonards accepts boarders from age 10, and the main entry points for international students are Year 7, Year 8, the one-year Pre-IB course in Year 11 and Year 12. Places in other year groups are considered during the year when space allows, with pupils normally arriving at the start of a term. Most international students join in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Students whose first language is not English complete the school's English assessment. For entry to the IB years in Years 12 and 13, the expected standard is equivalent to Cambridge B2 First for Schools or IELTS 5.5 to 6.0. No minimum is published for younger year groups, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Timetabled English language lessons support students who need them, and further help is available beyond these lessons.
Most non-British pupils need a Child Student visa. St Leonards is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies and works with a specialist immigration firm on visa matters, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. St Leonards may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
