Learn More →St Mary's Calne is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11 to 18 in Calne, Wiltshire, set on a 27-acre campus in the town with access via the M4 and Chippenham railway station. Founded in 1873 by a former vicar of Calne, it is a Church of England school of around 350 pupils, and its prep school, St Margaret's Prep, shares the same site.
Girls progress through the Lower School (Years 7 and 8), the Senior School (Years 9 to 11) and the Sixth Form, taking GCSEs and then, usually, three A Levels, with the Extended Project Qualification also available. Classes up to GCSE typically have 8 to 12 pupils.
Around 80 per cent of pupils, about 280 girls, are full boarders, and about a fifth of the school comes from overseas, with no single nationality dominating. A small number of boarding places are offered to girls aged 9 to 11, who live in the Lower School house and are taught at St Margaret's Prep. Staff-escorted coaches and taxis run at the start and end of terms and exeats.
The school uses a horizontal system, with girls of the same age living together. Years 7 and 8 share small dormitories in St Prisca's, Year 9 moves to St Cecilia's, and Years 10 and 11 have single study bedrooms in Gibbins and Joyce Walters. Sixth Formers live in Helen Wright and Florence Dyas, two connected houses with en-suite study bedrooms. Each house is run by staff who specialise in that age group.
Saturday morning lessons are followed by afternoon sports fixtures. On free weekends girls may go home after Saturday commitments, but most stay for trips such as ice skating, go-karting, horse riding and the theatre, with pottery, crafts, tennis and swimming on site.
The Learning Support Department provides tailored programmes for girls with identified needs, including those whose needs emerge after joining, and the Good Schools Guide records support for specific learning difficulties, autism and social, emotional and mental health needs. Each girl meets her personal tutor weekly, and a full-time Chaplain, a Counsellor and a wellbeing team support pastoral care.

St Mary's Calne admits girls mainly at ages 11, 13 and 16, joining Year 7, Year 9 or the Sixth Form, and entry to other year groups can be discussed. A small number of boarding places are also available for girls aged 9 to 11 in Years 5 and 6, a route the school suggests for overseas families considering a boarding senior school. Most pupils start in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Many international pupils take one-to-one English as an Additional Language lessons in their first term. Progress is reviewed regularly, and lessons continue only for as long as they are needed, charged as an extra.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. St Mary's Calne is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and provides the documentation needed to support visa applications, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. St Mary's Calne requires every overseas boarder to appoint a UK-based guardian, who helps with practical arrangements and pastoral care while the student is away from home. A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student.
