Learn More →Stonyhurst is an independent, co-educational Catholic day and boarding school near Clitheroe in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire, educating pupils aged 3 to 18 on a 1,000-acre estate. Stonyhurst St Mary's Hall, the prep school, takes children aged 3 to 11, and Stonyhurst College continues from age 11 through GCSE to the Sixth Form. Founded in 1593, Stonyhurst is the oldest continually active Jesuit school in the world.
Boarding is available from age 7. College pupils follow GCSE courses, with an intensive one-year GCSE route for older entrants, and Sixth Form students choose between the International Baccalaureate Diploma, A Levels and Cambridge Technical qualifications.
Nearly 400 of the school's 680 or so pupils board, and families come from across the UK and more than 30 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Full boarding runs seven nights a week, with pupils at home in the holidays. Weekly, flexible and occasional boarding are also offered.
Prep boarders live in one house at St Mary's Hall, with separate boys' and girls' bedrooms and sitting rooms. Most share a bedroom with three to five boarders of a similar age, and pastoral staff live in the house. In the College, boys and girls board in separate houses for each year group from Year 9, named after the traditional Stonyhurst year groups: Lower Grammar, Grammar, Syntax, Poetry and Rhetoric. Houseparents provide daily care with tutors and mentors, a Playroom Leader follows the progress of each year group.
College evenings include structured prep and evening Mass. Saturday school brings lessons in the morning and sport and co-curricular activities in the afternoon, while Sundays combine worship, rest, cultural trips and house activities. Younger boarders can swim or play tennis before bed, and their Boarding Committee helps plan weekend trips such as ice skating, go-karting, theme parks and the seaside.
The Learning Development department supports pupils with special educational needs through specialist teachers, learning mentors and teaching assistants, with a dedicated coordinator for exam access arrangements. It works with educational psychologists, speech and language therapists and local NHS services, alongside the Health Centre and School Counsellor, and English as an Additional Language support is available.

Stonyhurst considers international applications for every year group except Rhetoric, the final year of the Sixth Form, and boarding begins at age 7 in the prep school. Pupils joining in Syntax, Year 11, take an intensive one-year GCSE course, while those entering other year groups follow the main curriculum with extra English support where needed. Some international pupils stay for a single year, but many remain for longer. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Stonyhurst does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS levels by year of entry. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Once at the school, pupils whose first language is not English receive English as an Additional Language support alongside their subject lessons, and class sizes are kept small.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Stonyhurst may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
