TASIS England Overview

TASIS England is an independent, co-educational international day and boarding school in Thorpe, near Egham in Surrey, for pupils aged 4 to 18. Its 46-acre campus is about 25 minutes by road from Heathrow and 45 minutes from central London. Founded in 1976, the school is part of the TASIS Schools, a family of international schools owned by the TASIS Foundation, a Swiss not-for-profit educational foundation.

The school follows an American structure of Lower, Middle and Upper Schools. Upper School students work towards an American high school diploma, with more than 20 Advanced Placement courses on offer, and can take the International Baccalaureate Diploma in the final two years.

Boarding at TASIS England

Around 250 students from more than 30 countries board, roughly half of the Upper School together with some Grade 8 pupils. Boarding is open to students aged 13 to 18 and runs seven days a week, with boarders staying on campus at weekends.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in nine houses, allocated by age and gender, each holding between about 20 and 35 students. Most bedrooms are doubles or triples, with some singles and some en-suite rooms. The school matches roommates with different home languages, and returning boarders can request a house and roommate for the following year. Each house is led by a House Parent and Deputy House Parent supported by House Tutors, with staff on duty day and night.

Boarding Life

Study hall runs from 7pm to 9pm, Sunday to Thursday, and new students work under supervision before earning the right to study in their rooms. Weekend afternoons bring organised trips and activities, from London theatre visits and days in Brighton and Windsor to mountain biking, paintball and water sports, and a student-led scheme lets boarders plan their own approved outings.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Each section of the school has dedicated learning support staff, and individual needs are considered at the point of application. The Upper School runs an extensive English as an Additional Language programme. The Health and Well-being Center is staffed by nurses on call around the clock, with regular doctor visits, and college counsellors guide students through a four-year university preparation programme.

International boarders at TASIS England are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Information for International Students and Parents

TASIS England accepts boarders from Grade 8, equivalent to Year 9 and age 13, through to Grade 12, equivalent to Year 13. Boarding is concentrated in the Upper School, Grades 9 to 12, where around half of all students board. The academic year runs from late August to early June in two semesters, and most international students join at the start of the year; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. TASIS England offers English as an Additional Language support in its Lower, Middle and Upper Schools, with an extensive programme in the Upper School. Around 30 languages are spoken on campus, and boarders share rooms with students from other language backgrounds, giving daily practice in English outside lessons.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. TASIS England is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and normally issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies to boarding students once enrolment is complete. The admissions office guides families through the process, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time.
