Learn More →The Purcell School is an independent, co-educational specialist music school for day pupils and boarders aged 11 to 18, in Bushey, Hertfordshire, on the north west edge of London. Founded in 1962, it describes itself as Britain's oldest specialist music school and has occupied its Bushey site since 1997. It has around 200 pupils.
Pupils follow the National Curriculum to GCSE and then A Levels in the Sixth Form, with the RSL Level 3 Diploma in Creative Music Industries as an additional pathway. Music takes up between a quarter and a half of the timetabled week, and most leavers progress to conservatoires and universities in the UK and abroad.
Around three quarters of pupils board, giving a community of about 150 boarders, with full boarders outnumbering weekly boarders. Students come from more than 28 countries, and around one in five is from overseas. Boarding is encouraged because of early morning practice and evening rehearsals.
There are three boarding houses. Avison House is a mixed house for Years 7 to 9, Sunley House is for girls in Years 10 to 12, and Ellington House takes boys in Years 10 to 13 and girls in Years 12 and 13. Each house is led by a Houseparent with Assistant Houseparents, Day Matrons and resident graduate assistants, and every boarder has a Boarding Mentor. Corridors have their own common rooms and small kitchens.
Boarders start the day with early practice, and evenings include structured homework time in the houses. Practice rooms, a recording studio and the gym stay open in the evenings and at weekends. Weekends bring activities, social events and concerts, and many students travel into London for junior conservatoire programmes or performances. There is one exeat weekend each half term.
A learning support team works with pupils who have specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia, while more than 30 pupils receive English language support. A Health Centre, a counsellor and a visiting physiotherapist focused on playing-related injuries support wellbeing, and the school holds the Boarding School Mental Health Award at Gold level.
Every international boarder at The Purcell School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official The Purcell School website.
The Purcell School admits students from Year 7, at age 11, through to the Sixth Form at 16. Entry is not offered into Year 11 or Year 13, as these are examination years, although places outside the usual year groups can be considered. All students start in September. Places are offered on musical ability, commitment and potential rather than rigid grade requirements, and Sixth Form entrants are normally expected to hold at least five GCSE or IGCSE passes at grade 4 or above, or an international equivalent. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
The school does not publish minimum English scores for international applicants. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Students who speak English as an additional language receive specialist support in school, and the Good Schools Guide reports that more than 30 pupils take up this help.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. The Purcell School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies needed for the visa. The visa application itself is submitted by parents, and the visa must be granted before the student starts at the school. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
The Purcell School requires students whose parents live overseas to have a UK resident guardian who is over 24 years old and lives within two hours' travelling distance of the school. Families may appoint a relative or close friend, or use a guardianship organisation listed by AEGIS.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for The Purcell School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms The Purcell School's specific requirements as part of your application. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.
Whenever your child cannot stay at The Purcell School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.
We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with The Purcell School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.
A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. The Purcell School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
