The Royal School Armagh Overview

The Royal School Armagh is a co-educational voluntary grammar school with day and boarding pupils in Armagh, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. Its 29-acre College Hill campus serves pupils from the Preparatory Department, Primary One to Primary Seven, through to the Sixth Form. Founded by Royal Charter in 1608 under King James I, it is the oldest school in Northern Ireland. Originally a boys' school, it became co-educational in 1986 after merging with Armagh Girls' High School.

Pupils follow the Northern Ireland curriculum to GCSE and then take A Levels over two years in the Sixth Form. Co-curricular life includes rowing, rugby, the Combined Cadet Force and an Equestrian Society.

Boarding at The Royal School Armagh

The school runs the largest co-educational boarding provision in Northern Ireland, with around 80 boarders making up roughly 15 per cent of the school community, many of them from overseas. Boarding starts at age 8 in the Preparatory Department. Many boarders stay seven days a week, while pupils living closer to Armagh can board for four or five nights.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Junior boarders live in the historic main school building, in dormitories and individual or shared study bedrooms, with a common room and cinema room. Senior boarders move to Mall House, where pupils have single study bedrooms, and Sixth Form boarding occupies converted town houses facing the Mall. Residential staff led by the Head of Boarding provide day-to-day care, the Headmaster lives on site, and a matron is on duty at all times.

Boarding Life

From Monday to Thursday, after-school activities are followed by dinner, two hours of supervised prep in the library and study rooms, then supper and free time. There is no Saturday school. Trips run most weekends, from a tour of Dublin and an ice hockey match in Belfast to escape rooms, ice skating and shopping, and the sports facilities remain open under supervision.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Heads of year and a pastoral team know pupils individually, supported by a peer tutoring programme. Learning support is led by a Special Educational Needs Coordinator, and the school's STAR programme tracks each pupil's progress against personal targets.

International boarders at The Royal School Armagh are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Information for International Students and Parents

The Royal School Armagh welcomes overseas pupils into its boarding community. Secondary entry runs from Year 8 to Year 12, with most pupils joining at age 11 in Year 8 or at the start of the two-year Sixth Form A Level course, and boarding is also available from age 8 in the Preparatory Department. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. Armagh has good road access to airports across the island of Ireland. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

The school does not publish minimum English levels for international applicants. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. The Royal School Armagh is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, so it can sponsor eligible boarders, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement. Boarders at The Royal School Armagh return home for the Christmas and Easter holidays, while during bank holidays and some other school holidays they may remain in boarding under staff supervision, so guardian arrangements focus on the longer breaks, travel and any time a pupil needs care away from school.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for The Royal School Armagh boarders.
