The Royal School Dungannon Overview

The Royal School Dungannon is a co-educational voluntary grammar school for day and boarding pupils aged 11 to 18, on Ranfurly Road in Dungannon, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It is one of the Royal Schools ordered by King James I in 1608, received its royal charter in 1614 and has occupied its present site since 1636. Founded as a boys' school, it became co-educational in 1986 when it merged with Dungannon High School for Girls.

Pupils follow the Northern Ireland curriculum to GCSE. In the Sixth Form, students usually take four AS Levels in Year 13 and three A Levels in Year 14, alongside an enrichment programme that includes Young Enterprise and community work.

Boarding at The Royal School Dungannon

Around 50 boys and girls board, local pupils alongside students from overseas, with a strong group from Asia and particularly Hong Kong. Families can choose seven-day boarding or five-day boarding, and boarders are able to stay at school over the short half term holidays.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

The boarding accommodation sits at the heart of the school site, with separate wings for boys and girls, each with its own recreation area and kitchen. Boarders share refurbished dormitories of two or four beds. Matrons, tutors and house parents provide care, advice and supervision, and boarders sign in and out through an electronic system.

Boarding Life

A supervised library session runs after school from Monday to Thursday, and boarders are encouraged to manage their own study, activities and social time. Weekends are supervised, with in-house activities for boarders and optional trips. On site, boarders can use the sports hall, tennis courts, rugby and football pitches, music rehearsal rooms and a recreation room with table tennis and pool.

Academic and Pastoral Support

A Learning Support Co-ordinator writes individual education plans and works with teaching assistants to help pupils with special educational needs access lessons, and a literacy support teacher works with younger pupils and GCSE students in small groups or one-to-one. The site has been adapted for pupils with physical disabilities, with lifts, chair lifts and adjustable workspaces. Pupils whose first language is not English receive extra English lessons after school from TEFL-qualified teachers.
