Trent College Overview

Trent College is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, on the edge of Nottingham and about 15 minutes from East Midlands Airport. Founded in 1868, it works alongside The Elms, its junior school, so together they educate children from nursery age to 18.

Boarding is available from Year 7 to Year 13. Pupils follow a broad curriculum to GCSE and then choose from A Level and BTEC courses in the Sixth Form, where the Extended Project Qualification is also offered.

Boarding at Trent College

Trent College offers full, weekly and flexi boarding. Full boarders stay seven nights a week during term, weekly boarders go home at weekends, and flexi boarders stay a few nights a week. Boarders come from more than 15 nationalities, while only around 7 per cent of students are from overseas, so international boarders live in a largely British community.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

There are two boarding houses. Boys aged 11 to 18 live in Shuker House, in the traditional Main School building, and girls aged 11 to 18 board in Martin House, a modern building on the campus. Bedrooms are single or twin, and each house has a kitchen and common rooms. A Housemaster or Housemistress runs each house with an Assistant and a Matron, and staff live in so an adult is always present.

Boarding Life

Boarders rise at 7am and have breakfast before lessons begin at 8.30am. After the evening meal, prep starts at 6.30pm under duty tutors drawn from different departments, followed by activities such as swimming, baking and quizzes. Saturdays bring sports fixtures, revision lessons and co-curricular activities, while Sundays follow a programme of trips and activities shaped by boarders' suggestions, such as visits to London, theme parks and bowling.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Each pupil is supported by a welfare team that includes their tutor, the Learning Support Department, counsellors and the School Nurse. Pupils in Years 7 and 9 take standardised reading, spelling and mathematics tests, with further dyslexia screening where results suggest a need. A Positive Education programme and PSHE course focus on character strengths, health and relationships, and Sixth Formers receive specialist careers and university guidance.

International boarders at Trent College are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Trent College

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Trent College website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Trent College accepts international boarders from Year 7 (age 11) to the Sixth Form. Courses for overseas students include a pre-GCSE programme in Years 7 to 9, two-year and one-year GCSE courses, and two-year A Level and BTEC courses. Most students join in September, and new overseas students attend a residential induction programme before term starts. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. International full boarders receive up to four lessons of English as an Additional Language each week, taught by specialists in small ability groups at no extra charge. Sixth Formers can also sit IELTS for UK university applications.

Child Student Visa

Overseas students will usually need a Child Student visa. Trent College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement. Trent College closes for three exeat weekends a year, when international pupils may stay on site if booked in advance, but in the holidays boarders must travel home or stay with their guardian.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Trent College boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

Trent College offers short-term study for international students in Years 7 to 12, with a minimum stay of two terms and the option to extend. It suits students who want to improve their English and experience British boarding before a longer placement. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Trent College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
