Uppingham School Overview

Uppingham School is an independent, co-educational boarding school in the market town of Uppingham, Rutland. Founded in 1584 as a boys' school, it admitted girls from 1975 and has around 840 pupils, more than 370 of them in the Sixth Form. Its buildings are spread through the town, from the historic quadrangle and chapel to the modern Western Quad of science, art, sport and theatre facilities.

Years 7 and 8 attend the Lower School as day pupils, and boarding begins at 13 in Year 9. Pupils then take GCSEs in Years 10 and 11 before choosing from 26 A Level subjects in the Sixth Form, alongside a BTEC in Sport.

Boarding at Uppingham School

Uppingham is a full boarding school: more than 750 pupils board, and there is no weekly or flexi boarding, so the community stays together at weekends. Boarders come from across the UK and from around 30 countries overseas.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in around 15 single-sex houses across the town, most for boys or girls aged 13 to 18, with separate provision for Sixth Form entrants. Houses range from contemporary buildings to historic townhouses and Victorian country homes. Each is run by a Housemaster or Housemistress who lives in with their family, supported by tutors, matrons and house staff, and the whole house eats together at every meal.

Boarding Life

The day starts with registration in houses and, most days, a whole-school gathering in Chapel. Saturday morning lessons are followed by sports fixtures and rehearsals. On weekday evenings, boarders have supper in house before prep from 7pm, with societies, music and theatre on some evenings. Sundays bring a lie-in, Chapel and house activities, and weekend outings include paintballing, bowling and cinema and museum trips. Sixth Formers have their own social centre.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support department supports pupils with needs including dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, autism and ADHD, and the EAL department gives individual or small-group English help. Pastoral care is shared by house staff, tutors, matrons and counsellors, with doctors and psychologists supporting pupils' wellbeing.

Every international boarder at Uppingham School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Uppingham School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Uppingham School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Uppingham School admits international boarders at 13 into Year 9, at 14 into Year 10 and at 16 into the Sixth Form. The Lower School for Years 7 and 8 is a day house, so boarding entry starts in Year 9, and all pupils join in September. Most pupils are full boarders from 13, so international students share the same routine as their British classmates. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Uppingham does not publish minimum IELTS or CEFR scores. Every candidate is tested in English before admission and must show the level needed to follow an academically selective curriculum. After arrival, the EAL Lead assesses speaking, listening and writing and arranges one-to-one or small-group support. In Year 9, English Plus can replace a modern language for pupils who need to strengthen their written English, and help in later years is usually arranged as private tuition.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Uppingham School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and can sponsor this visa for its boarders, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Uppingham requires every pupil whose parents live overseas to have an educational guardian, appointed before the pupil joins. A full educational guardian should normally live within about two hours of the school, and a guardian under 25 is accepted only in exceptional cases. The guardian provides 24-hour contact during term, hosts the pupil at leave-out weekends, half terms and holidays, and must be available at short notice in an emergency. The school strongly advises using guardians registered with AEGIS.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Uppingham School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student.
