UWC Atlantic Overview

UWC Atlantic is an independent, co-educational boarding college for students aged 16 to 19 at St Donat's Castle, near Llantwit Major in the Vale of Glamorgan on the south Wales coast. The campus pairs a 12th century castle with 122 acres of woodland and farmland running down to the sea. Founded in 1962, it was the first college of the United World Colleges movement, which now has 18 schools and colleges worldwide.

All students take the two-year International Baccalaureate Diploma, studying six subjects alongside Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity and Service. The Systems Transformation Pathway, developed with the IB and first piloted at the college in 2023, replaces two Standard Level courses with project work on food, biodiversity, energy, migration and water, and still leads to the full Diploma.

Boarding at UWC Atlantic

Boarding is compulsory, with no day, weekly or flexi option, so all of the college's 350 to 380 students live on campus as full boarders. Around 80 nationalities are represented, and about two thirds of students have a first language other than English.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Students live in eight boarding houses set in the campus woodland. Bedrooms are dormitory style, each shared by four students, and every house has communal rooms for study and socialising. Two house mentors live in each house.

Boarding Life

Lessons run from 8am to just after 1pm, leaving afternoons, evenings and weekends for co-curricular activity. Every student completes at least two hours a week each of community service, physical activity and creative activity. House check-in is at 9.30pm from Sunday to Thursday and 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Outdoor education, project weeks, camps and trips to places such as Cardiff Castle and Stonehenge complete the programme.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Centre, in the heart of the castle, coordinates academic support. Its Additional Learning Needs Coordinator works with students who have dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD, autism, speech and language needs or hearing or visual impairments, using individual learning plans and small-group or one-to-one tutorials. A Health Centre with a clinical psychologist, nurses, counsellors and a drama therapist is open seven days a week, and three full-time counsellors guide university applications worldwide.

International boarders at UWC Atlantic are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at UWC Atlantic

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official UWC Atlantic website.

Information for International Students and Parents

UWC Atlantic admits students at around age 16 for its two-year IB Diploma course, which covers the equivalent of Years 12 and 13 in England. There is a single entry point, with the whole new cohort joining together at the start of the academic year, and the college calendar is divided into three terms with four breaks, in October, winter, spring and summer. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

The college does not publish a minimum CEFR or IELTS score for entry, and many students arrive with English as an additional language. An EAL Coordinator based in The Learning Centre draws up an action plan for each learner and provides dedicated language classes, one-to-one sessions, homework help, support within IB subject lessons and adapted texts and resources. Students can also book individual or group sessions with student language guides. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas, other than British and Irish nationals and those with settled or pre-settled status, will usually need a visa. UWC Atlantic is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and can sponsor students on both the Child Student and Student routes, with its admissions team advising which route applies. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for UWC Atlantic boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the college, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms UWC Atlantic's specific requirements as part of your application. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at UWC Atlantic, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with UWC Atlantic is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. UWC Atlantic may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
