Walhampton School Overview

Walhampton School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding prep school for children aged 2 to 13, set in around 100 acres of woodland, lawns and lakes on the edge of the New Forest near Lymington, Hampshire, looking across to the Solent. Its history dates back to 1948, and it has a Pre-Prep for ages 2 to 7 and a Prep School for ages 7 to 13.

Younger Prep pupils are taught mainly by form teachers, with specialist teaching from Year 5. Years 7 and 8 form the senior part of the school, and most pupils move on at 13 to senior schools such as Bryanston, Canford, Marlborough, Eton and Winchester. Sailing and riding are part of the co-curricular programme.

Boarding at Walhampton School

Boarding is open to children aged 7 to 13. Families can choose full boarding, seven nights a week during term with optional exeats, weekly boarding, flexi boarding on fixed nights, or occasional nights. Around one in ten pupils boards, most on a flexi or weekly basis, so the full boarding group is small.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boarders live in Bradfield House, on the top two floors of the main school building, with boys and girls on separate floors in dormitories for three to seven children. Shared common rooms are used for games, crafts, film nights and stargazing. Houseparents and other staff live on site, and a boarding team supports prep.

Boarding Life

After lessons, boarders have co-curricular activities, prep, supper, evening activities and showers, with lights out from 8pm for Years 3 to 5 to 9pm for Year 8. Saturdays bring activities, time in the woods or the outdoor pool and a family-style evening with a film. Sunday trips include Laser Quest, aqua parks, theatre visits and rib rides on the Solent. The school sets regular call times for parents overseas.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support Unit's specialist teachers provide individual programmes for needs such as dyslexia and dyscalculia, and the Good Schools Guide also reports support for ADHD, autism, speech and language needs and emotional wellbeing. Pastoral care is built on a tutor system, a house system and a dedicated pastoral team.

International boarders at Walhampton School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Walhampton School

Information for International Students and Parents

Walhampton School accepts boarders from Year 3 (age 7) to Year 8 (age 12). The main entry points to the Prep School are Year 3 and Year 7, and some overseas pupils join at these stages to build their English before moving on to a UK senior school at 13. Places in other year groups are offered when available, and most pupils start in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Walhampton does not publish minimum English scores, and entry is non-selective. The Learning Support Unit includes a member of staff for pupils learning English as an additional language, so younger international boarders can develop their English alongside the full prep curriculum and senior school preparation, which begins in Year 5.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa, which allows children aged 4 to 17 to study at an independent school. Walhampton School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and can sponsor this visa for its boarders, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

UK boarding schools generally require international boarders under 18 to have a UK guardian, and British Guardianship confirms each school's specific requirements as part of placement. For a boarder as young as 7, a reliable guardian close to Lymington is especially important at exeats and holidays, and whenever a child needs to leave school at short notice.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Walhampton School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
