Learn More →Wellington School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in the market town of Wellington, Somerset, for pupils aged 2 to 18. Founded in 1837 as a boys' school, it took its present name in 1913 and became fully co-educational in 1978. The Senior School occupies a 35-acre site in the centre of the town, with Wellington Prep School on an adjacent site.
The Senior School has around 600 pupils, more than 150 of them in the Sixth Form. Pupils follow a broad curriculum to GCSE, then take A Levels, BTEC courses and the Extended Project Qualification. A one-year Personalised Foundation Programme offers international students aged 15 to 16 a fast track to A Levels.
Boarding is offered from age 11, and more than 100 boys and girls from the UK and overseas board across three houses, most of them as full boarders, with smaller numbers boarding weekly or flexibly. The school has no fixed exeat weekends, so boarders can go away when it suits their family and remain in school otherwise.
All three boarding houses are on the campus, a few minutes' walk from the main school buildings. Girls live in Beech, where most rooms are doubles and younger girls have larger shared rooms. Boys board in Lights, the oldest boarding house, with study areas and a roof terrace, or in The Willows, where most rooms are twins and there is a cinema room. Single rooms have been added, every boarder has an individual study space, and each house is run by a Head of House with an Assistant Head of House and a Matron.
On Saturdays boarders join day pupils for competitive sport, alongside a boarders' morning programme of activities such as badminton, art, film and music. Sundays bring trips and on-site activities, from paddle-boarding and hill-walking to visits to historic sites and the beach.
All new pupils are screened for dyslexia, and those who need it receive specialist and individual help in the Independent Learning Centre alongside mainstream lessons. Tutors take first responsibility for each pupil's wellbeing, and Sixth Form students have dedicated study and social centres and individual university guidance.
Every international boarder at Wellington School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Wellington School accepts international boarders from age 11. Students aged 11 to 15 join the main school with English language support, those aged 15 to 16 can take the one-year Personalised Foundation Programme as a fast track to A Levels, and older students enter the Sixth Form for A Level courses. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
The school does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS levels. Instead, it considers whether each applicant has the language skills and attitude to cope with GCSE or A Level study and benefit from a British school. International students receive English support in small, mixed-nationality groups as part of their programme. British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Wellington School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Wellington School requires every boarder whose parents live overseas to have a guardian in the UK, including students aged 18 and over. The guardian must be either a family member who is not a student or a member of a guardianship organisation affiliated to AEGIS. In routine matters during term, house staff and the school's senior leadership act in place of parents.
British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Wellington School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Wellington School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
