Learn More →Wells Cathedral School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in the cathedral city of Wells, Somerset, for pupils aged 2 to 18. The school traces its origins to 909, has been fully co-educational since 1970 and occupies historic buildings around the Liberty, close to Wells Cathedral. It has more than 700 pupils across the Nursery, Pre-Prep, Prep School (Years 3 to 6), Senior School (Years 7 to 11) and Sixth Form.
Wells is one of England's specialist music schools, combining one-to-one tuition and ensemble work with a full academic curriculum, and also runs a chorister programme, a Specialist Mathematics Programme and a football pathway. Pupils take GCSEs in Years 10 and 11, then choose from more than 20 A Level subjects, with the Extended Project Qualification as an option.
More than 250 pupils board, the large majority of them full boarders, with flexi boarding also available. Boarding starts in Year 4, and international pupils, many of them drawn by the specialist music and mathematics programmes, live in the same houses and share the same activities as UK boarders.
Younger boarders live in Claver Morris, a co-educational house for pupils in Years 4 to 8 that is also home to the cathedral choristers. Older pupils board in one of eight Senior School houses set in medieval and 18th-century buildings, each with 20 to 30 boarders. Boarders sleep in dormitories with personal space and a lockable cupboard, and houses have common rooms, study areas and gardens. Each house has a resident Houseparent and Assistant, supported by a Matron and a wider house team.
Boarders use the indoor pool, gym, tennis courts and library. Weekends include cinema, theatre and concert trips, adventure activities and shopping in Bath and Bristol, and on exeat weekends boarders can join activity weekends away instead of going home or to a guardian.
Learning support follows a graduated approach led by SENDCOs and specialist teachers in each part of the school, with support for specific learning difficulties and neurodivergence. A daily tutor programme and the STEER tracking programme support wellbeing, and St Andrew's Lodge provides nursing and counselling in term time.

Wells Cathedral School welcomes international boarders from Year 4 through to the Sixth Form, with boarding available from age 8 in the co-educational junior house and in the Senior School from Year 7. Many international pupils join through the specialist music and mathematics programmes, and the school describes its international community as large enough to avoid isolation while keeping the character of a British boarding school. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
No minimum CEFR or IELTS level is published. Pupils with a suitable level of English join the school's EAL programme, which sets a language support plan reviewed each term, adds subject-specific sessions led by English language specialists and offers small-group or one-to-one teaching where needed. The school also prepares pupils for IELTS, Cambridge English examinations and IGCSE English as a Second Language. British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Wells Cathedral School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and supports families with the visa process, working with a regulated immigration adviser, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student.
