Westonbirt School Overview

Westonbirt School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school near Tetbury in Gloucestershire, for children aged 2 to 18. The Nursery, Prep School, Senior School and Sixth Form share a single 210-acre Cotswold estate centred on Westonbirt House, a Victorian mansion. Founded in 1928 as a girls' school, Westonbirt has admitted boys since 2019, has a Church of England foundation and is part of Wishford Education, a group of independent schools and nurseries.

Pupils take GCSEs in Years 10 and 11, with English, mathematics and the three sciences at the core. Sixth Formers choose from around 20 A Level subjects, a BTEC in Sport, a Leiths food and wine course and the Extended Project Qualification. Kemble station, with direct trains to London Paddington, is about 20 minutes away.

Boarding at Westonbirt School

Around 90 pupils board, roughly half of them from overseas, and boarders come from more than 25 nationalities. Full, weekly and flexi boarding are offered, and most boarders board full time.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Houses are organised by age. Sedgwick House, opened in 2024 for Years 7 to 9, sits beside the sports centre and pool. In Beaufort House, for Years 10 and 11, every pupil has a single bedroom, with shared bathrooms. Sixth Formers live in Holford House, a co-educational house with more than 30 en-suite bedrooms set in orchards and gardens on the edge of Tetbury, about a mile from the main campus and linked to it by shuttle bus. Each house is led by a houseparent.

Boarding Life

After lessons, boarders use the 25-metre indoor pool, sports hall, fitness suite and nine-hole golf course, and the youngest enjoy late-evening swims. Weekends are filled with activities and outings, and a school coach runs to London at exeats and half terms.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Learning support is available for pupils with dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, autism spectrum conditions and ADHD, with other needs considered individually, and non-native speakers follow an English as an Additional Language programme. Tutors guide each GCSE pupil, workshops cover study skills, revision and wellbeing, and Sixth Formers have their own common room and café.

International boarders at Westonbirt School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Westonbirt School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register through Wishford Education, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
