Winchester College Overview

Winchester College is an independent boarding school in Winchester, Hampshire, for boys aged 13 to 18 and for girls and boys in the Sixth Form. Founded in 1382 by William of Wykeham, it sits beside the River Itchen within an estate of around 250 acres. There are more than 700 pupils, and girls have been admitted to the Sixth Form since 2022.

Boys follow a broad curriculum to GCSE and IGCSE, with Latin, a modern language and the sciences at its core, then take three A Levels in the Sixth Form. Div, the school's own unexamined course of cultural and philosophical study, runs through every year group. Boys who start at 11 do so at The Pilgrims' School, moving up to Winchester for Year 9.

Boarding at Winchester College

Winchester is a full boarding school for boys from the age of 13, and almost all of its boys board. At 16, girls and boys can join the Sixth Form as boarders or day pupils, with girl boarders living in two purpose-built houses opened in 2026. Day pupils also belong to a boarding house.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

There are thirteen houses, each led by a Housedon with a matron and tutors. College is the house for the academic scholars, while ten Commoner houses each hold around 60 boys, with communal dormitories, common rooms and games rooms. St Cross and St Catherine, the Sixth Form girls' houses beside the Sports Centre, have single and double en-suite study bedrooms.

Boarding Life

Afternoons are set aside for sport and activities, evenings include around two hours of prep, and each pupil joins a weekly service activity such as Community Service or the Combined Cadet Force. Saturdays follow a structured timetable, while on Sundays the Sports Centre, Music School, library and Art School open for optional activities overseen by staff.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support department helps pupils with dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, autism, and hearing or visual impairments through one-to-one study skills sessions, specialist assessments and exam access arrangements. Nurses, the School Doctor and counsellors staff the Health and Wellbeing Centre, and the Futures programme gives Sixth Form pupils individual university and careers guidance.

Every international boarder at Winchester College must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Winchester College

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Winchester College website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Winchester College admits international boys at 13, joining Year 9 as full boarders, and both boys and girls at 16, joining the Sixth Form as boarders or day pupils. All pupils start in September. Boys who want to begin at 11 enter The Pilgrims' School in Year 7 and transfer to Winchester for Year 9. Entry at both stages is academically selective, and Sixth Form applicants are expected to hold strong GCSE grades in their chosen A Level subjects. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. The school does not publish a separate English as an Additional Language programme, so international applicants are expected to work confidently in English across a curriculum that includes Latin and extended writing.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Winchester College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and its guardianship policy treats suitable guardianship arrangements as a condition of visa sponsorship. The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Winchester College requires every pupil whose parents live overseas to have an educational guardian, chosen by the family. The guardian should have a permanent UK home, ideally within two hours of the school, must be over 25 and speak English, and cannot be a full-time student or a member of staff. Guardians look after pupils whenever they cannot be at school, including during illness, and handle airport transfers at the start and end of terms and half terms.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Winchester College boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with house staff, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Winchester College's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Winchester College, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Winchester College is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Winchester College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
