Learn More →Windlesham House School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding prep school for pupils aged 4 to 13, set on a 70-acre estate on the South Downs at Washington, near Pulborough in West Sussex. Founded in 1837 by Charles Robert Malden, the school has occupied its present site since 1934 and in 1967 became the first co-educational school in IAPS, the prep schools' association.
The school has more than 300 pupils, and boarding begins in Year 3, with Pre-Prep pupils attending as day pupils. Pupils follow a broad prep school curriculum to the end of Year 8 and are prepared for entry to senior schools at 13, including scholarship preparation for the most able.
More than 100 pupils board regularly, including more than 65 full boarders, with families from across the UK and countries including the USA, France, Spain, China, Hong Kong and South Korea. Families can choose full, weekly or flexi boarding, or occasional nights, and international pupils can join for immersive stays of one, two or three terms.
Boys and girls board in separate houses, which together provide accommodation for over 80 full boarders. Pupils sleep in dormitories of four to eight beds, with younger boarders in larger rooms and Years 7 and 8 in smaller dormitories for more privacy. Houseparents living in or beside the boarding areas lead each house, supported by matrons, boarding assistants and night staff.
Evenings combine activities, supper, supervised prep and free time, with staggered bedtimes by age. Around 50 to 60 boarders stay each weekend. Saturdays offer sport, music, drama, mountain biking, forest school and academic enrichment, followed by film nights, quizzes or campfires, and Sundays bring staffed outings to beaches, museums, ice rinks and adventure parks, with residential adventure weekends during the year.
The Learning Enrichment team supports pupils with dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia and attention difficulties through individual learning plans, in-class support and one-to-one or small-group sessions, and applies for exam access arrangements with senior schools and exam boards. Specialist EAL teaching is timetabled alongside lessons, and qualified nurses staff the school's Medical Centre.
