Learn More →Wisbech Grammar School is an independent, co-educational day school with international boarding, set in the historic centre of Wisbech, a market town in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Founded in 1379 by the Guild of the Holy Trinity, the school educates around 590 pupils from the early years to the Sixth Form.
Senior pupils work towards GCSEs, then A Levels in the Sixth Form, where BTEC courses and the Extended Project Qualification are also available. International students follow personalised timetables with English support, and pre-A Level students study selected GCSE subjects alongside it.
Boarding was introduced in 2019 and is designed for international students aged 14 and over, with around 30 full boarders. The school has no exeat weekends, boarders may stay in their house for the whole term, and a structured half-term programme runs each term. International students over 16 may instead live with a local homestay family.
Girls board in Hazel House, a free-standing house with its own garden behind the Dwight Centre, with four study bedrooms for up to twelve boarders, a large common room and a resident Houseparent. Boys live in Warren House, a converted family house on the far side of the school fields, where six bedrooms sleep up to sixteen boarders in rooms for two, three or four. Each house has a staffed duty office, housekeepers and its own laundry.
Boarders take breakfast and supper in the school dining hall, then return to their houses for supervised prep with staff on hand, followed by a house meeting and free time. At weekends boarders can cook for themselves, with a takeaway night on Saturdays. A trip away runs at least every fortnight, from punting in Cambridge and visits to Sandringham to climbing and archery.
An induction programme before the autumn term helps new international boarders settle, and boarding staff have experience of supporting students from East Asia in adjusting to UK study. The Learning Support team offers dyslexia screening, small-group and one-to-one interventions, and an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant who works with pupils on resilience and wellbeing.

Wisbech Grammar School takes international boarders from the age of 14, and the school's main entry points from that age are Year 10 and the Sixth Form. Most international students join in September, ahead of an induction programme before the autumn term. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Once at the school, international pupils receive English as an Additional Language and English for Academic Purposes teaching matched to their level, usually taking fewer academic options to make time for it. Students who need a longer foundation can follow a pre-A Level programme before starting the Sixth Form course.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Wisbech Grammar School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and supporting documents, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Wisbech Grammar School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
