Learn More →Woodbridge School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Woodbridge, Suffolk, a market town on the River Deben near Ipswich. It educates pupils aged 4 to 18 on two sites: the Pre-Prep and Prep School, covering Reception to Year 6, on Church Street, and the Senior School, Sixth Form and boarding house on the main Burkitt Road campus.
The school traces its roots to the 16th century and forms the core of the Seckford Foundation, a charity that grew from the endowment of Thomas Seckford, a courtier to Elizabeth I. Pupils typically take around ten GCSEs before choosing from more than 20 A Level subjects, with the Extended Project Qualification also offered.
Boarding is available from Year 7 to Year 13 as full or weekly boarding. The community is deliberately small, with space for around 60 boarders from more than 12 nationalities living alongside UK boarders.
All boarders live in School House, a historic co-educational house at the heart of the campus that has been upgraded throughout after recent investment, with quiet study areas, social spaces and a well-stocked kitchen. A senior member of the boarding team lives in the house with their family, and boarding tutors are on duty every evening. A medical centre in the house is staffed by qualified health professionals, and a local GP visits weekly. Room allocation is confirmed by the school on entry.
Each year starts with a Boarders Welcome Week. From Monday to Thursday, supper in the Tuckwell Dining Room is followed by two hours of quiet study with tutors on hand, then free time, with bedtimes staggered by age. Evening and weekend activities include cookery, pottery, football, chess, bowling and quiz nights, and trips have included Cambridge, London, the Harry Potter studios, Framlingham Castle and wakeboarding.
The Learning Support team, based in the CoRE (Centre of Reaching Excellence), provides one-to-one sessions, tutoring and in-class help, including support for dyslexic students and with handwriting, mathematics and revision skills, and the school states that needing support is never a barrier to entry. A resident member of the boarding team who teaches English runs evening EAL workshops.
Every international boarder at Woodbridge School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Woodbridge School website.
Woodbridge School offers full boarding to international students from Year 7 (age 11) through to the Sixth Form. The usual entry points are Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 and Year 12, and students are encouraged to join at the start of the academic year in September, although other start dates can be considered where space allows. Places normally run for at least one full academic year. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Woodbridge School publishes minimum English levels for older entrants, expressed as IELTS scores with their CEFR equivalents:
English is assessed as part of the application for all international entrants, including Years 7 and 8, although students who already hold a suitable English qualification may not need to sit the test. Boarders who are still developing their English can attend evening EAL workshops held in School House.
Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Woodbridge School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) to students who need one, referring families to its immigration advisers for help with the process, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
Woodbridge School requires every overseas boarder to have a UK-based educational guardian for the whole of their stay at the school. The school does not publish a distance or minimum age rule for guardians, and it is an AEGIS member school.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Woodbridge School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
