Wrekin College Overview

Wrekin College is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Wellington, on the western edge of Telford in Shropshire, for pupils aged 4 to 18. The Senior School and Sixth Form share the main campus, and Wrekin Prep, for pupils aged 4 to 11, has a separate site nearby. The school was founded in 1880 by Sir John Bayley.

Pupils follow a broad curriculum in Years 7 to 9 and start GCSE courses in Year 10. Sixth Form students take A Levels, BTECs or a mix of both, and the Extended Project Qualification is also offered. International students can join a one-year GCSE course in Year 11 or a one-year Pre-A Level course. Birmingham Airport is about an hour away by road.

Boarding at Wrekin College

Around 90 boys and girls board, from Year 7 to the end of the Sixth Form, and families can choose full, weekly or flexi boarding. The Wrekin International Group, known as TWIG, helps overseas boarders settle in and marks national occasions from Chinese New Year to Festa della Repubblica.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Boys board in Bayley and Tudor, and girls in Hadden Hall. Boarders in Years 7 and 8 sleep in these houses but spend the school day in Lancaster, the house for the two youngest year groups. Younger pupils share small rooms, and older pupils can ask for double or single rooms, some with private bathrooms. The houses were fully refurbished in 2024 and have common rooms, kitchens and games rooms, and each is run by a Houseparent and Assistant Houseparent with tutors, matrons and prefects.

Boarding Life

After tea, boarders complete their prep before free time in the house. Each term's Weekend Adventures programme includes visits to London, Liverpool and Chester, shopping trips, watersports at Alderford Lake and theme parks such as Drayton Manor, and Saturday subject clinics give extra academic help.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Support for Learning department helps pupils with dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia through specialist lessons, charged in addition to fees, with Individual Education Plans reviewed each term and exam access arrangements where eligible. A Director of Wellbeing leads pastoral care alongside a visiting counsellor, an independent listener and a nurse-led health centre.

Every international boarder at Wrekin College must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Wrekin College

Information for International Students and Parents

Wrekin College accepts international boarders from Year 7, with entry possible at ages 11 to 16. Older students can take a one-year GCSE course in Year 11, and Sixth Form entrants choose A Levels, BTECs or the one-year Pre-A Level course. The main intake is in September, and entry at other points is considered individually. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Wrekin College does not publish minimum IELTS or CEFR scores, and applicants whose first language is not English sit an English assessment. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. International pupils have a weekly EAL lesson and a Saturday exam skills clinic, and can prepare for Cambridge English certificates and IELTS.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Wrekin College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register through the Wrekin Old Hall Trust, and the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Wrekin College requires every international boarder to have a UK-resident guardian aged 25 or over. Close relatives, private foster carers, school staff and parents holding a Parent of a Child Student visa cannot act as nominated guardian, and the school expects guardians to be AEGIS accredited or BSA Certified.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Wrekin College boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

The Wrekin International Experience Programme lets overseas pupils board full-time for between half a term and one and a half terms, joining the weekend trips and taking small-group EAL lessons. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Wrekin College, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Wrekin College is finalised. A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Wrekin College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
