Wycliffe College Overview

Wycliffe College is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, for pupils aged 3 to 19. The Senior School and Sixth Form occupy a 52-acre campus, with the Nursery and Prep School at Ryeford Hall nearby. Founded in 1882, the school is two minutes' walk from Stonehouse station, which has direct trains to London Paddington.

Pupils move from the Prep School to the Senior School at 13 to begin GCSE courses. The Sixth Form, with more than 200 students, offers 29 A Levels, BTECs in Sport and Business, a Cambridge Technical in Digital Media and the Extended Project Qualification, and international students aged 15 to 17 can take the Development Year, a one-year GCSE course.

Boarding at Wycliffe College

More than 200 boarders from over 30 countries live at Wycliffe, with boarding from Year 3 to Year 13. Families can choose full boarding or flexi boarding of one to four set nights a week, and day pupils can stay for occasional nights. International pupils in the Prep School can also board for half a term or more.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Prep boarders live in Pennwood, for around 35 boys, or Windrush, for around 30 girls. Senior boys and girls board in separate houses, and Year 12 boarders may move to Loosley Halls, the mixed Sixth Form house. Younger boarders usually share with one or two others, moving towards single rooms as they progress, and many Sixth Formers have their own room. Each house is led by a Housemaster or Housemistress with tutors and matrons.

Boarding Life

Prep boarders complete prep at set times each evening, and their weekends range from bowling and football to pizza and movie nights. Senior weekends bring brunch, sports fixtures, themed events and outings. Boarders can stay in their house over exeat weekends at no extra cost.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Wycliffe is accredited by CReSTeD for its dyslexia provision, with individual tuition from specialist teachers in the Learning Support Unit, and the Good Schools Guide also lists support for dyspraxia, ADHD and Asperger's. Form tutors, pastoral leads and house staff oversee welfare, and two qualified nurses staff the Medical Centre. Sixth Formers have specialist guidance for UK, American and overseas universities.

Every international boarder at Wycliffe College must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

English Language Requirements

Wycliffe does not publish minimum IELTS or CEFR scores. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement. Prep pupils in Years 5 to 8 follow an EAL Foundation Programme in groups of two to five, with younger pupils supported individually, and Senior pupils in Years 9 and 10 can take timetabled EAL lessons at extra cost. English support is built into the Development Year.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Wycliffe College is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and advises families on the documents required, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Wycliffe College requires every international pupil to have a UK guardian, including those joining for short stays, and refers families to AEGIS accredited guardianship organisations.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Wycliffe College boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Short-Term Stays and Exchange Placements

International pupils in Years 3 to 8 can board full-time in the Prep School for half a term, a term or longer, with EAL teaching matched to their level and the option to stay in school over exeat weekends. Families considering a shorter placement can explore our Student Exchange Programme and short stay guardianship.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Wycliffe College's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Wycliffe College, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Wycliffe College is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Wycliffe College may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
