University Overview

A Church of England foundation formerly known as Bishop Grosseteste University, Lincoln Bishop University has taught students in Lincoln for over 150 years. Its origins lie in the Lincoln Diocesan Training School for Mistresses, created in the early 1860s with the Bishop of Lincoln's backing to prepare women as teachers. Marking its centenary in 1962, it adopted the name Bishop Grosseteste College after Robert Grosseteste, a thirteenth-century Bishop of Lincoln, and in 1966 it launched its first BEd degree. It became a university college in 2006 and gained full university title in 2012, yet it remains on its original site within the city's historic cathedral quarter.

Teacher education continues to be a particular strength, and five schools deliver the academic programme, covering teacher education, lifelong learning, applied humanities, health and care, and business. Qualifications range from apprenticeships, foundation degrees and foundation years to undergraduate, master's and doctoral study. The university belongs to the Cathedrals Group, an association of universities with church foundations. It has a campus chapel served by a full-time Anglican chaplain, together with a multi-faith prayer room, and welcomes those of every faith and of none.

Information for International Students

International students at Lincoln Bishop University are sponsored under the Student route, with guidance on obtaining a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) and satisfying the visa rules. Undergraduates normally need IELTS 6.0 overall with no component under 5.5, although those scoring 5.5 across all components can be admitted provided they sign up for in-sessional English support, for which a fee applies. Taught postgraduate courses expect IELTS 6.5 overall with every component at 6.0 or above, while the PGCE and other teacher training programmes require more. PTE Academic, Trinity ISE and LanguageCert are also accepted. Many degrees include an integrated foundation year, though the foundation years associated with Early Childhood Studies are closed to international applicants.

Under the first-year accommodation guarantee scheme, rooms are offered in campus halls and in a student village within a few minutes' walk, and international arrivals apply through a dedicated process. Before arrival, students receive advice on what to pack and on travelling to the campus, while induction events help newcomers settle. Staff also help students open a bank account, register with a doctor and understand the rules governing part-time work. International scholarships are offered.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK universities typically require international students who are under 18 when they enrol to have a UK-based nominated guardian in place. The guardian acts on behalf of the parents while the student is a minor, serving as the university's point of contact in an emergency, supporting the student's welfare and providing a trusted adult close by. British Guardianship provides this as a fully accredited university guardianship service.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Lincoln Bishop University is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Our UK university guardianship services for Lincoln Bishop University start from £250 per term. We also offer premium and bespoke packages, and with our flexible guardianship services you only pay for the services you need. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

No. Once your child turns 18, the nominated guardian requirement no longer applies and guardianship services are no longer needed. This is why our university guardianship is priced per term, so you only pay until your child's 18th birthday.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to respond quickly in an emergency. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day, act as the university's emergency contact until the student turns 18, and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Lincoln Bishop University may also ask for the guardian's details at enrolment and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS-accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
