Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a public university in the centre of Liverpool. It traces its history to the Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts, founded in 1823, and after a series of mergers became Liverpool Polytechnic in 1970 before gaining university status in 1992. It is named after Sir John Moores, the businessman and philanthropist who supported its predecessor institutions.
LJMU is one of the larger universities in the UK, with around 25,000 students. Teaching is organised into two faculties based on separate city centre campuses: the Faculty of Society and Culture at Mount Pleasant, covering business, law, education, humanities and the arts, and the Faculty of Health, Innovation, Technology and Science at City Campus, covering engineering, sciences, nursing, pharmacy and sport. The university has a particularly strong reputation in sport and exercise science and hosts the Astrophysics Research Institute.
