University Overview

SRUC, Scotland's Rural College, was formed in 2012 by merging the Scottish Agricultural College with three further colleges: Barony, Elmwood and Oatridge. The Scottish Agricultural College itself dated from 1990, when three regional agricultural colleges founded between 1899 and 1904 were combined. As a specialist tertiary institution, SRUC covers further education, higher education and research. Before gaining the power to award its own degrees in 2024, it depended on the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh for its awards.

Teaching is organised into two schools, Veterinary Medicine and Biosciences, and Natural and Social Sciences. Subjects include veterinary medicine and veterinary nursing, animal science, agriculture, horticulture, forestry, food, conservation and the environment, equine studies, engineering, golf and rural business. SRUC has five campuses: Oatridge in West Lothian, Elmwood in Cupar, Barony near Dumfries, Aberdeen, and King's Buildings in Edinburgh. The college also operates research farms, and thousands of rural businesses receive support from SAC Consulting and from its veterinary and laboratory services, which means students learn in close contact with working agriculture. Fewer than 5,000 students are enrolled, the majority of them undergraduates.

Information for International Students

Because SRUC holds a Student sponsor licence, it can sponsor international applicants for full-time study on eligible degree and postgraduate programmes that are delivered on campus. Only a small share of students come from overseas. Practical learning is central to the courses, which draw heavily on farms, specialist teaching areas and veterinary facilities run by the college. Postgraduate study can be followed on campus or through part-time and distance learning routes; however, the Student visa is compatible only with full-time, on-campus attendance.

Accommodation can be found on or close to several campuses, among them Aberdeen, Dumfries and Oatridge, and additional options exist in the neighbouring areas. The college provides pre-arrival guidance along with advice on getting ready for life and study in Scotland. Scholarships and bursaries are offered, and applicants should establish which of them international fee payers can receive. Because the five campuses lie in different parts of Scotland, applicants need to confirm the campus where their course is taught before organising travel or accommodation, and should ask the admissions team what English language level their programme requires. The UK Graduate Route is available to eligible graduates.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK universities typically require international students who are under 18 when they enrol to have a UK-based nominated guardian in place. The guardian acts on behalf of the parents while the student is a minor, serving as the university's point of contact in an emergency, supporting the student's welfare and providing a trusted adult close by. British Guardianship provides this as a fully accredited university guardianship service.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with SRUC (Scotland's Rural College) is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Our UK university guardianship services for SRUC (Scotland's Rural College) start from £250 per term. We also offer premium and bespoke packages, and with our flexible guardianship services you only pay for the services you need. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

No. Once your child turns 18, the nominated guardian requirement no longer applies and guardianship services are no longer needed. This is why our university guardianship is priced per term, so you only pay until your child's 18th birthday.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to respond quickly in an emergency. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day, act as the university's emergency contact until the student turns 18, and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. SRUC (Scotland's Rural College) may also ask for the guardian's details at enrolment and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS-accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
