University Overview

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David grew from two older institutions. Saint David's College opened at Lampeter in 1822, and its royal charter, granted in 1828, is the oldest of any Welsh university; Trinity College Carmarthen was founded in 1848. The two came together in 2010, were joined by Swansea Metropolitan University in 2013, and in 2017 took in the University of Wales. Coleg Sir Gâr and Coleg Ceredigion, both further education colleges, also belong to the wider UWTSD Group. Over 15,000 students study across about 20 subject areas, from business, computing, and engineering and motorsport to art, design and architecture, education, the performing arts, theology and the humanities.

The SA1 Waterfront campus in Swansea opened in 2018, and the city also houses Swansea College of Art. Carmarthen's campus keeps the original Trinity College buildings, and Cardiff has a centre for performance as well as the Wales International Academy of Voice. The campuses in Birmingham and at Canary Wharf in London focus on health and social care, business and computing. Lampeter, the original campus, ceased teaching in 2025. The university's approach centres on small classes and career-focused learning.

Information for International Students

Enquiries from overseas are handled by a specialist international team, and the International Registry team guides applicants through every stage of the Student visa application, fees and the health surcharge included. In general, undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes ask for IELTS 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component, or a qualification of equivalent standard. Conditional offer holders who need to improve their English may take an online pre-sessional course run by Oxford International Digital Institute, and in some subjects foundation degree routes are offered.

There is no guarantee of accommodation. International students in Carmarthen live in the university's residential halls, whereas those in Birmingham, Cardiff, London and Swansea use private student accommodation, helped by the accommodation team. New international students can pay to be collected from Heathrow Airport at the beginning of each semester. Before enrolling online, newcomers are invited to an international welcome event, and throughout their course Hwb, the student support service, provides practical help. International scholarships and bursaries, given as fee waivers or tuition reductions, cover both undergraduate and postgraduate study, and the Graduate Route is open to eligible graduates.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK universities typically require international students who are under 18 when they enrol to have a UK-based nominated guardian in place. British Guardianship provides this as a fully accredited university guardianship service.

No. Once your child turns 18, the nominated guardian requirement no longer applies and guardianship services are no longer needed. This is why our university guardianship is priced per term, so you only pay until your child's 18th birthday.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to respond quickly in an emergency. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day, act as the university's emergency contact until the student turns 18, and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. University of Wales Trinity Saint David may also ask for the guardian's details at enrolment and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS-accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
