University Overview

Serving north-east Wales, Wrexham University is a public institution. It descends from the Wrexham School of Science and Art, established in 1887, which went on to become the Denbighshire Technical Institute and then, in 1975, the North East Wales Institute of Higher Education. On achieving university status in 2008 it took the name Glyndŵr University, which was renamed Wrexham Glyndŵr University in 2016. The present name followed in 2023, reflecting the rising profile of Wrexham, a city since 2022.

The principal campus is located on Mold Road, Wrexham, and the city is also home to the North Wales School of Art and Design. Northop, in Flintshire, hosts a rural campus devoted to animal sciences; opto-electronics technology is the focus of a site in St Asaph. Of the roughly 8,500 students, a considerable share study at postgraduate level. Two faculties organise the teaching: Social and Life Sciences, and Arts, Science and Technology. The university places weight on its civic role and on working with businesses, public bodies and community groups. It now holds research degree awarding powers, and 2026 marks the first intake of research students under them.

Information for International Students

Applications are processed by Wrexham University's International Admissions team. The CAS policy, Student visas and students' obligations after enrolment are covered by separate immigration and UKVI compliance teams, and once students have arrived the student welfare service offers support. Undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses normally require IELTS 6.0 with every skill at 5.5 or above, while for research degrees the level is 6.5, with no skill under 6.0. Applicants who need to improve their English can take pre-sessional and intensive courses at the university's Language Centre.

An integrated foundation year is available with many degrees, and pre-master's programmes help international graduates get ready for postgraduate study in the UK. On selected courses there are extra intakes in February and June. Students holding appropriate prior qualifications can also choose top-up degrees. Wrexham Student Village provides accommodation. Scholarships are open to international applicants at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and Flywire can be used to pay tuition fees from abroad. After finishing their studies, graduates may apply for the Graduate Route, which allows them to stay and work in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK universities typically require international students who are under 18 when they enrol to have a UK-based nominated guardian in place. The guardian acts on behalf of the parents while the student is a minor, serving as the university's point of contact in an emergency, supporting the student's welfare and providing a trusted adult close by. British Guardianship provides this as a fully accredited university guardianship service.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Wrexham University is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Our UK university guardianship services for Wrexham University start from £250 per term. We also offer premium and bespoke packages, and with our flexible guardianship services you only pay for the services you need. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

No. Once your child turns 18, the nominated guardian requirement no longer applies and guardianship services are no longer needed. This is why our university guardianship is priced per term, so you only pay until your child's 18th birthday.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to respond quickly in an emergency. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day, act as the university's emergency contact until the student turns 18, and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Wrexham University may also ask for the guardian's details at enrolment and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS-accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
