Abbey College Manchester Overview

Abbey College Manchester is an independent, co-educational day and boarding college in Manchester city centre, teaching students from the GCSE years through A Levels to university foundation level. Founded in 1990, it occupies a modern seven-storey building off King Street. The college is part of the Abbey DLD Group of Colleges, alongside Abbey College Cambridge and DLD College London.

Courses include one-year and two-year GCSE and IGCSE programmes, two-year A Levels, one-year A Level retakes, International Foundation Programmes and a Preparation Pathway for University. Students come from around 25 countries as well as from across the North West and Yorkshire, and small classes allow teachers to follow each student's progress closely.

Boarding at Abbey College Manchester

Residential boarding is open to students aged 16 and over at the start of the academic year, who live as full boarders in Clydesdale House. The residence stays open over half term and Easter. Students under 16 live with host families selected by the college, unless they live with a parent or close relative. The British School Experience offers a shorter stay of one or two terms.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Clydesdale House, used exclusively by the college and about ten minutes' walk from the teaching building, has around 70 single en-suite bedrooms grouped in clusters of about ten, each cluster sharing a large kitchen and lounge. Full-time houseparents are on site around the clock, with 24-hour security and CCTV, and an in-house cook prepares three meals a day.

Boarding Life

Houseparents run an activities programme for residents, with some external trips charged as extras. The enrichment programme adds football, basketball, badminton and yoga, together with clubs in science, engineering, astronomy, film, art and music. Departments arrange visits to theatres, museums, galleries and universities, and the city centre puts libraries and sports facilities within walking distance.

Academic and Pastoral Support

Each year group has a Head of Year, and every student has a personal tutor seen daily. A SENDCo works with teachers and the wellbeing team to support students with learning differences, and the college has a Wellbeing Room, a college nurse with on-site medical facilities and a large study centre.

International boarders at Abbey College Manchester are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

The visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
