Learn More →Abbey College Cambridge is an independent, co-educational boarding college in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, for students aged 13 and over. Founded in 1994, it occupies a purpose-built campus at Homerton Gardens, a ten-minute walk from Cambridge railway station. The college is part of the Abbey DLD Group of Colleges, alongside DLD College London and Abbey College Manchester.
Students join for Year 9 or for one-year, 18-month and two-year GCSE courses, then progress to A Levels or a one-year International Foundation Programme for direct university entry. The college pairs boarding school routines with the subject range of a sixth form college, and runs preparation for Oxbridge, medicine and engineering applications.
More than 400 of the college's roughly 470 students board, drawn from a wide range of countries. All boarders are full boarders, with three meals a day served seven days a week. The British Boarding School Experience offers a shorter stay of one or two terms with boarding.
Abbey House, on the main campus, has more than 100 single en-suite bedrooms and some twin rooms, with priority for students aged 13 to 16. Older students live in Tripos Court, five minutes away, or Purbeck House, opposite the campus, both offering en-suite rooms for students aged 16 and over. Each residence has live-in house parents, separate floors or blocks for boys and girls, 24-hour security and communal study areas.
Boarding staff share meals with students and run a weekend activity programme. Wednesday afternoons are given to compulsory enrichment, with more than 50 clubs, and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award is offered. Optional trips run at weekends and in the holidays, including one in Europe and one further afield each year. Residences stay open at half term and Easter but close at Christmas and over the summer.
Every student belongs to one of seven Houses led by a Housemaster and has a personal tutor, seen daily in a tutor group of no more than 15. A Learning Support Team led by the SENCO provides individual learning plans and one-to-one sessions, working with boarding staff and a medical team that includes counsellors.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student.
