Ardvreck School Overview

Ardvreck School is an independent, co-educational preparatory school for boarding and day pupils aged 3 to 13, set on a 40-acre estate in Crieff, Perthshire, in the foothills of the Scottish Highlands. The school is made up of a Nursery for ages 3 to 5, Little Ardvreck for ages 5 to 7, and the main boarding and day school for ages 7 to 13. Founded in 1883, Ardvreck joined the Sedbergh Schools Group, a charitable family of schools, in 2026.

Pupils are prepared for Common Entrance and senior school scholarships, and leavers move on to senior schools in Scotland, England and France, including Sedbergh, Eton, Harrow, Gordonstoun and Marlborough College. Outdoor learning and regular expeditions are central to school life.

Boarding at Ardvreck School

Boarding starts at age 7. Families can choose full boarding, weekly boarding from Monday to Saturday, flexi boarding for occasional nights or busy periods, and single Ard Hoc overnight stays. Most pupils come from Scotland, alongside a group of French pupils and boarders from elsewhere in Europe and further afield.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

All boarders live under one roof in Dalvreck House, which can accommodate up to 70 children on any night. Pupils sleep in shared dormitories that they make their own with personal belongings. The boarding team combines experienced house staff with younger assistants, and new boarders follow an individual induction programme with an experienced boarding buddy.

Boarding Life

After lessons and supper, boarders take part in an evening activity programme, with time to chat and relax before bed. Weekends are packed with forest play, swimming, hill walks, team games, cinema trips, movie nights and themed evenings in the house. Older pupils also have Saturday morning school about 20 times a year. The school arranges transfers to Edinburgh and Glasgow airports and chaperoned trains between London and Gleneagles for exeats and holidays.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Learning Support department provides one-to-one and small-group help, and subject teachers flag pupils who may need extra support. The Good Schools Guide notes support for pupils with dyslexia and mild learning difficulties, and average class sizes of around 14. House staff keep parents updated by phone, email and messaging groups.
