Benenden School Overview

Benenden School is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11 to 18, set in 250 acres of parkland at Hemsted Park, near Cranbrook in Kent. Founded in 1923 by three teachers from Wycombe Abbey, the school moved to its present estate the following year and is part of the Benenden Family of Schools, which also includes Orwell Park School near Ipswich. It is a member of HMC and the Girls' Schools Association, and its Anglican chaplaincy welcomes students of all faiths and none.

Students in Years 7 and 8 follow the Benenden Diploma, a two-year skills-based course, before moving on to GCSEs and A Levels. Every Sixth Former also takes a Professional Skills Programme covering applications, interviews and life skills.

Boarding at Benenden School

More than 400 students board, over 80 percent of the roll. Benenden is a full boarding school with a flexible weekend pattern: after Saturday lessons and sport, students may spend Saturday night away, except on the first and last weekends of term, but more than two-thirds usually stay for the weekend programme.

Boarding Houses and Accommodation

Every student belongs to one of ten houses. Girls in Years 7 and 8 live in Medway before moving to one of five Middle School houses. In Norris, for example, younger girls share dormitories and older girls have twin or single rooms. The Sixth Form lives in four Founders houses, where every student has her own bedroom. Each house is led by a Housemistress or Housemaster with a deputy, house tutors and matrons.

Boarding Life

The weekend programme mixes socials, outings and creative, sporting and cultural activities, some held jointly with boys' schools. A Travel Office arranges transport for exeats and holidays, including an airport coach to Heathrow at the start and end of term and at half term, and escorted travel to London at fixed exeats.

Academic and Pastoral Support

The Academic Support department, led by the SENCo, screens students for dyslexia and other learning needs and offers small-group sessions, individual lessons for an additional charge and exam access arrangements. The Medical Centre is staffed by registered nurses 24 hours a day in term time, with regular school doctor surgeries, a visiting physiotherapist and a school counsellor.

Every international boarder at Benenden School must have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.

Facilities & Activities at Benenden School

Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Benenden School website.

Information for International Students and Parents

Benenden School admits most new students at 11+, 12+ and 13+, joining Years 7, 8 and 9, with a small and competitive entry into Year 10 and the Sixth Form. Normal entry is in September. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.

English Language Requirements

Benenden does not publish minimum CEFR or IELTS scores, but confident spoken and written English is a condition of entry, and non-native applicants to Year 10 and the Sixth Form sit a formal English assessment. Students are screened in their first weeks, and those who need help receive individual EAL tuition, usually one lesson a week for an additional charge, with IELTS or TOEFL coaching where needed for university. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.

Child Student Visa

Students coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Benenden School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies once a suitable UK guardian is in place, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

UK Guardian Requirement

Benenden requires parents who live outside the UK to appoint an education guardian, whatever their daughter's age. The guardian must be over 18, not in full-time education, fluent in English and a UK resident who is a British citizen or holds settled status, and the school strongly advises that they live within two hours of Benenden. Where no family member or friend is available, the school accepts a guardianship organisation and refers families to AEGIS, the accrediting body for UK guardianship.

British Guardianship is AEGIS accredited and a BSA Certified Guardian, and can act as the nominated UK guardian for Benenden School boarders. Our boarding school guardianship service covers regular contact with the school, travel coordination and safe accommodation with vetted host families during half terms, exeats and holidays, giving parents a single, reliable educational guardian in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

UK boarding schools generally require international students under 18 to have a UK-based guardian, and British Guardianship confirms Benenden School's specific requirements as part of your application. The guardian acts on behalf of parents in the UK, is the school's point of contact in an emergency and looks after the student whenever they cannot be at school. We provide this as an AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship service.

Whenever your child cannot stay at Benenden School, for example during half terms, exeats or holidays when boarding houses close, they stay with one of our vetted host families. Every host family is visited in their home, provides professional and personal references and holds an Enhanced DBS check for all household members aged 16 and over. British Guardianship remains your child's educational guardian throughout every stay.

We have guardians available and ready to be assigned. The overall timeframe depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and communication with Benenden School is finalised. As every case is different, timelines can vary, but we aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Boarding school guardianship is charged per term and starts from £350, with host family stays, travel arrangements and other services added as your child needs them. Full details are on our guardianship fees page.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Benenden School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
