Learn More →Orwell Park School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding preparatory school for children aged 2 to 13 at Nacton, on the edge of Ipswich in Suffolk. Its 110 acres of grounds overlook the Orwell estuary, and the main school occupies a late Georgian mansion once owned by Colonel Tomline, founder of the Port of Felixstowe. Founded in Lowestoft in 1868, the school moved to Nacton in 1937. In 2026 it became part of the Benenden Family of Schools, alongside Benenden School in Kent.
The school is organised as a Lower Prep for ages 2 to 9 and an Upper Prep for Years 5 to 8, and pupils are prepared for transfer at 13 to senior schools across the country.
Around 60 of the school's roughly 210 pupils board, from Year 3 upwards. Families can choose full boarding, seven days a week until exeats, weekly boarding of five or six nights, or flexi boarding from one night a week. Full boarders are mostly international pupils, and the school recommends boarding for overseas families. Each new boarder is paired with a boarding buddy.
Boys and girls board in separate houses, each led by its own Head of Boarding. Pupils sleep in dormitories, keeping the same bed all term, with common rooms and quiet spaces in each house. Houseparents are on duty every evening and overnight, supported by boarding staff, gap assistants and matrons, and two independent listeners are available to boarders.
Evenings begin with registration, then supper, activities and time in the common room, with boarders in Years 3 and 4 following an earlier routine that ends with silent reading. Full boarders who stay at weekends join trips and activities.
Every pupil from Year 3 has a tutor who meets them weekly. The OrWellbeing Hub combines a life skills classroom, the Learning Enrichment Centre and a day surgery staffed by nurses trained in mental health. Pupils with additional needs have an individual education plan reviewed termly with the SENDCo, with small-group or one-to-one support and assistive technology, and the Good Schools Guide records CReSTeD registration for dyslexia.
International boarders at Orwell Park School are generally expected to have a UK guardian. British Guardianship provides AEGIS accredited boarding school guardianship for international students at UK boarding schools.
Every accredited UK boarding school offers a range of sport, arts and academic facilities for international students, together with an extended programme of activities in the evenings and at weekends. For full details of the facilities and activities available, please visit the official Orwell Park School website.
Orwell Park School accepts boarders from Year 3, so international pupils can join at any stage from age 7 up to Year 8, the final year before senior school. Most international students join in September; entry in other year groups is considered individually. Because pupils move on at 13 to senior schools across the country, the school gives international families a clear route into the UK senior school system. British Guardianship supports international families through every stage of the application with our boarding school admissions service.
Orwell Park School does not set a minimum English score for entry, and many pupils arrive with developing English. Each pupil's level is assessed on entry, and the EAL department then provides small-group or one-to-one lessons, language support within ordinary lessons and explicit teaching of subject vocabulary, with progress reviewed regularly. The Head of EAL works closely with boarding staff and tutors, and pupils can prepare for Cambridge English qualifications. New pupils are met by a buddy on their first day, and staff check in regularly to help with homesickness in the first weeks.
International pupils coming to the UK will usually need a Child Student visa. Orwell Park School is a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and discusses visa arrangements individually with each family, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.

For boarders of prep school age, a guardian matters most at exeats, half terms and long weekends, when full boarders leave school, and for travel to and from the airport.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. Orwell Park School may also ask for the guardian's details before the start of term and set additional requirements of its own. As an AEGIS accredited guardianship provider, British Guardianship meets these requirements on your behalf, with vetted guardians, Enhanced DBS checked host families and 24-hour emergency support.
