Learn More →Brockhurst and Marlston House Schools are independent day and boarding preparatory schools sharing one estate at Marlston, near Hermitage, north of Newbury in West Berkshire, and educating children from 2 to 13. Brockhurst was founded as a boys' prep school in Shropshire in 1884, moved to Marlston House, a Grade II* listed house built in the 1890s, in 1945, and became co-educational in 1995.
The schools follow a twin model: boys at Brockhurst and girls at Marlston House are taught in small single-sex classes from Year 3 to Year 6 and increasingly in mixed classes in Years 7 and 8, while sport, music and activities are shared. Pupils are prepared for Common Entrance and scholarship assessments at 13, and there is no Saturday school.
Boarding runs alongside day places in a small community that mixes UK and international full boarders with local pupils who board on some nights. Families can choose full boarding, flexi boarding for one or more nights a week, or occasional nights, and many day pupils move into boarding for their final two years. The school stays open to boarders over exeat weekends.
Boarders live in the main house, with girls and boys on separate floors, in dormitories they are encouraged to personalise. The houseparents and their family live on site beside the boarders, supported by a boarding team and the School Nurse, and a high proportion of staff also live on the estate.
Weekday evenings bring supper, an evening assembly, activities and sport academy sessions, tuck shop and free time, followed by hot chocolate, silent reading and lights out. Saturdays combine a morning activity programme with free time and a film or sports hall evening, while Sundays bring excursions such as paintballing, go-karting, kayaking and trampolining, alongside in-house activities and summer barbecues.
The Learning Development Centre gives individual lessons to pupils with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, alongside literacy and numeracy support and short courses in study skills, touch typing and handwriting. Visiting speech and language and occupational therapists work with younger children, and external specialists are used where further assessment is needed.

The schools expect pupils to have a reasonable command of English so that they can follow the full curriculum and take part in co-curricular life, and no fixed CEFR or IELTS level is published. Tuition in English as an Additional Language is available as an extra for pupils who need it. English is assessed as part of the application, and British Guardianship confirms the level required for each year of entry during placement.
Pupils coming to the UK from overseas will usually need a Child Student visa. Brockhurst and Marlston House Schools are a licensed Child Student sponsor on the UKVI register and can sponsor eligible boarders, while the visa application itself is submitted by parents. Our Child Student visa guide explains the requirements and process, and families holding a British National (Overseas) visa can contact us for guidance on the BN(O) route.
The schools accept overseas pupils only when they have a UK-based educational guardian approved by the school. For boarders of prep school age, the guardian is the adult in the UK who acts for parents during exeats, half terms and holidays, and whenever the school needs a local contact.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to the school to respond quickly in an emergency; many boarding schools set a maximum travel time.
